Fermoy-Mallow bus reinstated

The Fermoy to Mallow bus service has recommenced, connecting Fermoy, Ballyhooly and Killavullen to the town of Mallow.

Running from Monday to Friday, the service will make two round trips daily, with an extra service on Monday.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland announced the public service, operated by Local Link Cork, on Wednesday, September 22.

In 2019, TheAvondhu reported that passengers, including students of Mallow College of Further Education, were left in limbo when the local link bus route from Fermoy to Mallow was pulled by the Department.

Local councillors have now welcomed the return of the service which was once widely used, particularly by students travelling to and from the college.

Cllr Frank O’Flynn welcome the announcement, stating that it was ‘ great news’ for Fermoy, Ballyhooly, Castletownroche and Killavullen, who will now see increased connectivity with Mallow.

“This is great news, especially for students. It’s a big help for tourism and for shoppers. This service was a big question all the time for local councillors and I’m delighted to see the bus service in place.

“Now that we have this, I’m going to fight to increase the number of services so we can see more connectivity along the Blackwater valley,” Cllr O’Flynn said.

An adult fare for the reintroduced bus route will cost €3, student fares are €2, while children under five will travel free, as will those with travel passes.

The bus will leave Fermoy from The Grand Hotel on Ashe Quay at 8.05am and 2.55pm on weekdays and also at 10.30am on Mondays making stops at the Primary school in Ballyhooly, the community centre in Castletownroche, Chapel Street in Killavullen, Park Road in Mallow, Tesco in Mallow and Mallow College of Further Education.

Return services leave Mallow College at 8.50am and 15.40 on weekdays and Tesco in Mallow at 14.45 on Mondays only.
