Disney Playmakers Programme proving a hit in Kilworth

The progressive soccer club in Kilworth is one of only 30 clubs invited to run the new Disney UEFA Playmakers Programme, which is a new approach to introduce girls aged 5-8 years old to soccer.

Targeting girls in this age group not currently playing football, the Football Association of Ireland is joining 22 other UEFA national associations in committing to roll out ‘Playmakers’ through schools, clubs and local communities.

The programme is being run by local coaches at Kilworth Celtic FC, who were delighted with the uptake on the first night recently, which saw 18 energetic and excited girls join in the Disney-themed fun. Word is spreading quickly and already, another eight have signed up for next week’s session.

“It’s great to see the outreach and positivity from both the players and parents. The club is very keen to see this programme be a real success in terms of uptake and outcomes. The girls had great fun with the Disney character-inspired activities, and really enjoyed their first session,” according to Conor Cooney, one of the coaches.

“We still have a few places left, so any girls aged 5-8 who want a fun, inclusive and rewarding groupbased event, please come along on Wednesdays at 6pm at the brand new Kilworth Astro facility, adjacent to Kilworth NS in the village. The programme is particularly good for girls who may be a little shy, or not involved in formal sports teams.”

If parents in the locality are interested in their own girls becoming involved in the Disney Playmakers Programme, Michelle can be contacted on (087) 9045216.
