THE NUN’S STORY

BY JIM LYSAGHT

It’s all the way back to June 1959 for this gem of a film from director Fred Zinnemanm based on the true story of former nun Marie-Louise Habets. Fred Zinneman insisted on securing Audrey Hepburn for the role of Sister Luke and his persistence paid off when he convinced Jack Warner that he was making the right choice.

Fred Zinneman took his entire cast and crew to Rome, Belgium and to the Congo Jungle. The film from its early sequences in the convent, through harrowing scenes on a madhouse to the key Congo episodes is rich in a sense of missionary selflessness and is both majestic and moving. There are two men in the story, Peter Finch as the agnostic who becomes a faithful friend of Sister Luke and Dean Jagger as the father concerned for her safety.

Also in a very strong cast are Edith Evans, Peggy Ashcroft and Mildred Dunnock. Audrey Hepburn was nominated for an Academy Award for her very moving performance.
