LIVE EVENTS ARE BACK IN CAPPOQUIN COMMUNITY CENTRE

October 22nd all going well, will see the reopening of live indoor acts. It has been a long twenty-one months and Covid-19 has changed the world, but finally we welcome back live music acts to the Cappoquin Community Centre.

First up on stage is the excellent ABBA Tribute Band in November. Next up before Santa makes his deliveries, we have the great Nathan Carter in December. As usual a brilliant show to a sell-out crowd is guaranteed. Last, and by no means least, is the top-notch Showband Show next February - a popular Christmas present would be the Showband Show tickets.

CAPPOQUIN REGENERATION

Now that the painting and façade improvements are almost completed in the town, we have some more very positive news to report this week.

Planning permission has just been granted for the following developments in the town, complete refurbishment and development of commercial and residential space in Moore’s Hotel, Fennell’s Pub and the former Uniacke’s Shop.

Permission has also been granted for refurbishment and residential development of 3 adjoining properties on Upper Main Street and the corresponding properties on Green Street.

Further permissions have been granted for a new layout of the Market Square and immediate streets, landscaping of the green area at Port na hAbhann and new car parks on the old council depot at Twig Bog and at the rear of the houses on Lower Main Street also in Twig Bog.

The next step is an application to the Department of Rural and Community Development, for funding to carry out the construction work on the projects for which planning permission has been granted. It is expected that construction work will begin in mid-2022.

Consultants are currently carrying out feasibility studies on the looped walk from Millwheel Park, along the old railway bridge and return via the Boathouse and on the establishment of a Blueway on the River Blackwater.

BLACKWATER HOUSE

Construction work is continuing on the refurbishment and conversion to the offices of Blackwater House. This was delayed due to Covid-19 and completion date is now March 2022. We are currently negotiating with a prospective tenant in respect of this property and will have more news on this later in the year.

COMMUNITY CENTRE

Considerable energy improvements and efficiencies are currently being carried out in the Community Centre. All lighting fittings have been replaced with low energy usage LED fittings by local contractor Daniel Leahy. The walls of the Community Centre have been pumped with insulating material by Dungarvan Insulation.

The final work is the fitting of 40 photo voltaic cells on the roof of the centre, which will generate electricity for the entire building and feed any surplus electricity back to the grid. This work is being carried out by Sunstream Energy, Tramore. The estimated cost of this work is €40,000 with grant assistance of €10,000 being received from SEAI. This work will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the Cappoquin Community Centre and assist our climate change programme.
