Kotryna representing Ireland

The big news of course this week is Kotryna Pacerinskaite representing Ireland in the International Schools Championship this coming weekend in Derbyshire, England. It’s been many years since Fanahan McSweeney AC has represented Ireland on the international stage. We have watched Kotryna’s success through the years and her dedication to shot putt and hammer. Success takes talent and hard work, both of which Kotryna has shown in abundance, and we wish her and the Irish team as a whole all the best of luck. Your club is behind you Kotryna!

Last weekend the Community Games Munster finals were held in MTU. In the U8 Sophie Cohen and Molly Thornton took part in the 60m sprint and medalled. Jack O’Rourke came fifth in the U10 hurdles and medalled in the 60m sprint. Matt Coughlan also made the top eight and also medalled in the hurdle event. Darragh Crowley came fifth in his 60m heat.

In the U10 girls, Beth Hegarty came fifth place in the 200m final. In the U12s, Leo O’Rourke came fifth in the 100m heat and Cara Burke seventh in the 600m final. Katie Lenihan came fifth in the U14 100m final and Vanessa Burke seventh in the 800m final.

A special thanks to Seamus Fox for his dedication to the Community Games in the Mitchelstown area.

On Sunday it was Avondhu Athletics Cross Country in Doneraile. Unusually for cross country the sun was shining and the ground was solid. Saoirse Horgan came third in the U8 300m girls and Aodhán Dingivan also came third in the boys race. Aaron Horgan had a fourth place finish in the 1000m. The Dingivan Clan were out in force with Siún taking part in the U10 1,000m and Muireann in the U11 1,500m. Cross country is not for the faint hearted and it was great to see the young athletes enjoying a well organised local race.

Best of luck to Kotryna and all of our other athletes competing this weekend.
