Seniors off to a super start

SENIOR SE SYSTEMS CAMOGIE CHAMPIONSHIP St Catherines 1-14 Seandún 2-8

St Catherines senior camogie championship campaign got off to a great start with a victory last Saturday v Seandún in Castleroad.

The Saints were well focused and up to the task. They found plenty of space around midfield and their half forward line and they were 0-5 to 1-0 ahead after 19 minutes, Finola Neville in the thick of the action. 3 points from our opponents after the water break meant it was Seandún that led 1-3 to 0-5 at half-time.

St Catherines superior teamwork was clearly on show in the second half. A free from Finola Neville went all the way to the net. With 48 minutes on the clock, they led by 6 points, as Ann Marie Rohan, Evelyn Ronayne and Laura Hayes worked hard and sent ball after ball forward resulting in Finola Neville and Aoife Hurley picking off great scores.

With Seandún trailing by 6 points, they responded with a goal and 2 points, bringing them right back into it. Aoife Hurley and Finola Neville replied to this with 2 quick points and saw the game out well for their side. These ladies have worked really hard throughout lockdown and the summer, well done ladies. Scorers for St Catherines: F Neville 1-8 (1-6 f), N O’Regan 0-1, A Hurley 0-4, C Dunning 0-1.

St Catherine’s panel: Yvonne O’Neill, Orna Neville, Caroline Motherway, Ann Marie Rohan; Rachel O’Callaghan, Laura Hayes, Evelyn Ronayne; Mairead Rohan, Emer O’Brien; Linda O’Donnell, Finola Neville, Chloe Draper, Cliona Dunning, Aoife Hurley, Niamh O’Regan, Áine O’Regan, Caoimhe Galvin, Áine Twomey, Sara Mai Clancy, Hazel Sheehan, Esther Power, Jill Hurley, Annette Fitzgerald, Tessa Condon, Meabh O’Keeffe, Aisling O’Brien and Sarah Barry.

U16

Our U16s were out on Sunday morning, at home in Ballynoe, playing in the league semi-final where they faced a very strong Barryroe team.

The girls gave it their all and put up a fierce battle but an ‘on the age’ team came out on top. We wish Barryroe the best of luck in the final. These girls are out again on this Thursday, September 23 in another plate semi-final, this time taking on Killeagh at home. Best of luck girls!

U11s AND U12s

The U11s and U12s have been invited to take part in the Tesco Camán Festival, which takes place this Saturday, September 25 in Cork Colleges Pitches in Castle Road. They will have an early start, having to be there for 8.45am.

The U11s will face Crosshaven, Castlelyons and Ballincollig and the U12s will face Ballinhassig, Ballincollig and Crosshaven. It’s great to be playing teams they haven’t met this season and I’m sure an enjoyable day will be in store.

U6s

Our U6s hosted a blitz last Saturday. Castlelyons and Dungourney took part in what was a well organised event. We had 4 teams, keeping numbers small, ensuring everyone got as many touches as possible. They had a very enjoyable morning.

This is most likely their last match of the season; they continue to train Saturday mornings while the weather holds up. This group has had consistently big numbers turning up each week. The future is bright!

GET WELL WISHES

We would like to extend get well wishes to Sophia Fitzgerald who suffered a serious injury at the recent U14 All-Ireland final.
