Open 18 hole singles this weekend

This weekend the club will host an 18 open singles event. Tee times can be booked through the BRS system or by phoning 025-24072. The year is moving on and in a few weeks we will be reverting to shorter course competitions. But in the meantime let’s avail of the full 18 holes. Catering is available for all golfers. While the real golfing focus will be on the Ryder Cup this weekend, we also have a competition to look forward to in Mitchelstown Golf Club.

OPEN CHAMPAGNE SCRAMBLE SPONSORED BY HORGAN’S DELICATESSEN SUPPLIES

Last weekend the club hosted an open 18 hole champagne scramble competition which was sponsored by Horgan’s Delicatessen Supplies Ltd. Horgan’s has been one of the club’s longest sponsors and we are very grateful to the company for coming on board again this year. The competition was an open event with excellent prizes on offer.

Sincere thanks to Horgan’s Delicatessen Supplies Ltd for generously sponsoring this event again this year. The company, founded in the 1970s, is a 100% Irish owned business and is one of Mitchelstown’s biggest providers of employment. Your continued support to the town as an employer and the club as a loyal sponsor, is very much appreciated.

RESULTS

1st Siobhan O’Mahony, Geraldine O’Donovan, Annette Hennebry 64 pts. 2nd Sean McGrath, Bob Childs, Tommie Childs 63pts. Gross Kieran Dennehy, Liam O’Sullivan, Mick Bane 46pts gross. 3rd Paul Foley, Denis O’Sullivan, John Hennessy 61pts.

SEAN O’BRIEN MEMORIAL CUP

Recently the club hosted the Sean O’Brien Memorial Cup, the final GOY event of the year. As said previously Seanie was a long standing and very popular member and this cup is kindly sponsored by some close friends in his memory.

It certainly was a mixed bag weather-wise, with a distinct autumnal feel particularly on Sunday. The winner of the cup was Ger Harte (9.1) with a magnificent score of 44 points and he needed every point to win on countback on the back nine. Ger is a popular and loyal member of the club and we are sure Seanie would be delighted with Ger taking the cup back to Glanmire.

The unfortunate golfer to lose out on countback was Fergal Whelton (15.3) who on most other occasions would see his 44 points total come out on top. The gross winner was the ever consistent Olan Kelleher (+1.0) with 36 points and in third place was Ger O’Keeffe (18.8) on 42 points.

The winner of the 18 hole open singles run in parallel over the weekend was Paul Foley (11.5) on 39 points.

TUESDAY COMPETITION

Our popular Tuesday night competition is nearing the end of its run with possibly 1 or 2 more weeks till it’s completion for the year. As always, we will continue until the evenings prevent otherwise.

At this stage, we hardly need to remind that players must book in on the BRS system. To avoid congestion, the timesheet for the Tuesday competition will be open all day and it will be €5 for members and €10 for visitors to enter.

Last week’s winner of the 10 hole competition was John Courtney (20.3) with a total of 26 points. In second place was Jerry Quinn (16.1) on 23 points.

WEDNESDAY QUALIFIER SPONSORED BY KEARY’S MOTOR GROUP

The gents’ Wednesday Qualifier is nearing the end of its run with 2 more weeks before the final. The format is as previous years with weekly winners qualifying for the final to be held on the weekend of 1st/2nd/3rd October. Details of the final will be released closer to the time.

The club are delighted to have Keary’s Motor Group for the sponsorship of our Wednesday qualifier and look forward to a successful conclusion to our qualifier series at the end of the summer period. Last week’s qualifier was Robert Murray on a score of 38 points by virtue of having best back 6.

NEW MEMBERS’ SCRAMBLE

We held a scramble Friday 11th for new male members and as it was a successful event, we are going again on Thursday, September 23.

We would like to invite all male members, new to golf or new to Mitchelstown Golf Club, to a scramble on Thursday, September 23 from 5.30 onwards. The format will be a 10-12 hole scramble aimed at helping newer members meet others, pick up a few tips and rules and enjoy our fine golf course. Please sign up on the timesheet between 5.30 and 6.30 in whatever tee time suits best.

MEN’S SCRATCH CUP RESULTS AND REPORT

The previous weekend saw the men’s club hosting all 4 of its prestigious Scratch Cup competitions (minor, intermediate, junior and senior), and what a weekend it was.

As mentioned last week there was a truly magnificent turnout and a very large contingent of visitors. Whilst the men’s club were delighted to welcome all those visiting from other clubs, we did not expect them to leave with all the silverware! Proving that local knowledge only counts for so much, all four of the Scratch Cups were won by visiting golfers.

No doubt, while this may have been disappointing for our local members, it was a reflection of the high standard of golfer that was attracted to come and play the Scratch Cups on our outstanding golf course. Congratulations again to head greenkeeper Pat Murphy and his team and course manager Michael Nevin, in presenting a test worthy of the Scratch Cup competitions.

The results of the Scratch Cup weekend are as follows: Senior Scratch Cup sponsored by Alan Hayes Golf and Leisure Mitchelstown was won by Ronan Twomey (+3) from Muskerry Golf Club who played a great round to complete the course in 70 strokes. Unfortunate to lose on countback was Greg Barrett (+1) from Mallow who also shot a 70. The best nett score was Paul Touhy (3) with a 69.

The Junior Scratch Cup, also sponsored by Alan Hayes Golf and Leisure Mitchelstown was won by James Burns (7.4) from Bandon Golf Club with a round of 77. In second place was Brian Tabb (4.4) from Lee Valley with 78 and the best nett score was local man Jack Quirke (7.9) with a 69. The winner of the Intermediate Scratch Cup sponsored by John Cleary was Michael O’Brien (10.1) from Dooks Golf Club with a fantastic round for the intermediate grade shooting a 76. In second was another local man Micheal Hennessey (16) with a fine round of 78 and best nett was Patrick McKenna (16) from Shannon Golf Club with a 64.

Finally, the Minor Scratch Cup sponsored by Doody’s Care Plus Pharmacy was won by Ray Barry (17.7) from Cahir Golf Club with a round of 85 followed home in second place by William Cahill (19.9) on 86 and John Lineen (23.2) taking best nett in this category with a 66.

Lastly, we would like to thank again our sponsors Doody’s Care Plus Pharmacy, John Cleary of Walsh’s Bar and Alan Hayes Golf and Leisure Mitchelstown who have been kindly sponsoring our Scratch Cups for a number of years.
