Excitement at Munster finals

Ten Mitchelstown Area Community Games athletes competed with aplomb, at Munster Regional Community Games’ finals on Saturday last at Munster Technical University, Bishopstown. It was run by the National Committee with Cork officials.

Sophie Cohen claimed 4th pewter medal in U8 60m final, whilst Matt Coughlan secured a final U8 60m spot and a medal. Molly Thornton won a 4th place medal in under 10 hurdles. Her cousin Jack O’Rourke finished 5th in the U10 hurdles semi-final. Beth Hegarty was a close 5th in the U10 200m final. Darragh Crowley finished 5th in the U10 100m semi-final.

Leo O’Rourke secured 6th spot in the U12 100m semi-final. Cara Burke got up for 7th in the U12 600m final. Katie Linehan claimed 5th position in the U14 100m final, having had a comfortable semi-final result. Vanessa Burke claimed 7th in U14 800m final. The top two in each regional race qualified for the nationals, where 8 athletes will contest each final in Carlow IT on Saturday next.

The U14 long jumpers qualifiers to compete in the nationals are Orla McCallum at 10am and Diarmuid Towey at 11am on Saturday. Best of luck folks.

County swimming and cross-country qualifier competitions will be conducted in October for national finals on November 27th in UL, Limerick. Contact 0873589734 for further details.
