Crucial championship win

Kilworth 0-28 Aghada 1-17

Our hurlers had a deserved victory over Aghada in round 2 of the Co Op Superstores Cork county premier intermediate hurling championship played in glorious sunshine at Castlelyons last Saturday afternoon.

We now have three points from two game and are right in the mix to qualify for the knockout stages. In fact, a win in our final group game in a joust with Ballinhassig would secure top spot in the group. The spread of scorers, consistent scoring throughout the hour (seven points scored in each quarter) in addition to an excellent work rate all over the field were telling factors in this win.

We held a slender lead 0-7 to 1-3 at the first water break, extending the lead to three, 0-14 to 1-8 by half-time. Aghada battled hard before succumbing to a solid second half display especially in the final twenty minutes. We led by four points 0-21 to 1-14 at the three-quarter stage, going on to double that lead by full-time.

The lads dug deep, showed great, character, heart, and commitment to gain the upper hand and shake off a dogged and determined Aghada side.

Jeromy Saich opened the scoring, the passage of play developing from the throw in as he gathered a pass from Liam Whelan, cut through the middle and slotting the ball between the posts. Great work from Brian Sheehan set Will Condon up for his first and Kilworth’s second point after two minutes.

Aghada opened their account with a goal after a stray pass in the middle of the field was punished and led 0-2 to 1-0. Noel McNamara responded with a pointed free following a foul on Will Condon. Will caught a free out from Kieran Walsh after an initial foul on Eoin Carey deep in defence. Nathan Byrne with a nice pass saw Jeromy Saich add his second point as Kilworth retook the lead. A quick puck out to Eoin Carey saw him land the first of his five points from play in the 9th minute.

Both sides had a goal chance each before Aghada added their first point of the afternoon. Point from Eoin Carey in the 12th and 13th minutes following two very good balls from Nathan Byrne pushed Kilworth 0-7 to 1-1 in front. Aghada closed the quarter in the ascendency adding two points (1 free) to leave it 0-7 to 1-3 in our favour at the first water break.

PRESSURE PLAY

Aghada equalised on the resumption following a mistake in defence. Eoin Carey and Aghada exchanged white flags and the game was still finely balanced after twenty-two minutes. Two further overs from the East Cork men gave them a two-point advantage 0-8 to 1-7 by the 26th minute. Kilworth responded with two excellent Liam Whelan efforts.

Will Condon catching a free out from Kieran Walsh before laying off to Liam for the first, with Eoin Carey excellent in the build-up for the second. A foul on Noel McNamara which he duly converted saw Kilworth retake the lead and Noel followed it up shortly after with another placed ball resulting from a third man tackle on Jeromy Saich.

Great pressure resulted in James McCarthy intercepting an Aghada clearance and he passed to Will Condon to point from the right. Noel McNamara rounded off Kilworth’s first half scoring with a point from a free after Brian Sheehan was upended to leave a much better reflection on the scoreboard as we led 0-14 to 1-8 at the interval, Aghada getting their eighth point from a free on the stroke of half-time.

Noel picked up where he left off with another pointed free on the changeover. Great work and pressure from a number of players forced the Aghada defender into overcarrying resulting in the free. The pendulum swung in Aghada’s direction for the next few minutes as they tagged on two points (1 free) to reduce their deficit to two points by the 35th minutes 0-15 to 1-10.

The lads upped the intensity once more and great pressure from the inside forward line halted Aghada clearing their lines with Brian Sheehan on hand to split the posts. The work rate of our forwards was evident once more in the lead up to the next score. A Jamie Sheehan strike at goal was well saved by the keeper, with their defence denied the chance to clear, Kilworth turning the ball over with Brian Sheehan drawing a free, and Noel converting from close range.

NIP AND TUCK

A huge effort from Liam Whelan from the halfway line followed by two Aghada pointed frees left it 0-18 to 1-12 after forty minutes. Will Condon landed a beauty, catching a puck out before turning to score his third point of the afternoon. Back came Aghada with points in the 42nd and 43rd minutes to leave two points between the sides again. Kilworth finished the quarter strong, with two pointed frees, Noel McNamara punishing another overcarrying indiscretion from our opponents, with Kieran Walsh getting in on the scoring act also with a pointed free from distance.

Eoin Carey was fouled in defence with the referee signalling an advantage. The ball was worked up field to Noel McNamara who had just gathered possession and was about to round the keeper when the referee brought play back for the original infringement. The converted free left it 0-21 to 1-14 at the three-quarter mark. Kilworth flew out of the blocks in the fourth quarter, Noel McNamara now operating on the ‘40’ added to his tally with two points from play in quick succession the first from distance, the second closer to goal, with Eoin Carey grabbing his fifth point from play and the lead was extended to seven points 0-24 to 1-14.

Once more the team’s work ethic was evident when severe pressure in the middle of the field led to Aghada overcarrying with Noel on hand to convert the resulting free. A twenty-one-yard free for Aghada was well saved on the line before Aghada pointed from play. A great cross-field clearance from Eoin Carey was gathered by Will Condon who was fouled, Noel again dissecting the posts before adding his third from play after great pressure on the Aghada puck out yet again.

Aghada with a pointed free was followed by a foul on Eoin Carey in attack resulted in a penalty. Noel McNamara stepped to strike which resulted in a fine save from the Aghada keeper. Mike Sheehan with a lovely point rounded off our scoring, with a late Aghada white flag from play leaving the final score 0-28 to 1-17.
