Ballygiblin U17 hurlers have a win and a loss

Our U17 hurlers played the first of their 2 championship matches this week at home versus Clyda Rovers on Wednesday evening.

Ballygiblin were quick off the mark notching up a couple of quick points. Clyda eventually got on the scoreboard with 2 frees. At halftime Ballygiblin were in a comfortable lead. The lads were playing very good hurling and were first to the ball all the time. Clyda got an early goal in the second half but this was quickly answered with goals from Conor Walsh (2) and Eoin Flynn. This drove on the lads and with some great points from placed ball and play they were in control for the match. Clyda Rovers did get a goal late in the second half but Ballygiblin at this stage were well on top. The final score was Ballygiblin 3-13 Clyda Rovers 2-09.

Their next outing was against Newmarket away on Saturday afternoon. With numbers tight again the lads had just 15 available to play. This was a very even match with both sides trading scores. At halftime Ballygiblin were trailing by a few points but were putting in a great performance against a strong Newmarket side. The second half was also very even but Newmarket started to pull away just before the second water break. Despite their best efforts Ballygiblin fell short in the end and were beaten on a scoreline Ballygiblin 4-13 to Newmarket 4-20.

This was a very high scoring match and both sides put in a huge performance. The lads have won 3 out of their 4 games which is a brilliant result. Our final group match is at home on Monday, September 27 to Liscarroll/Churchtown.

U13 AND U12

Our U13 hurlers hosted Churchtown/Liscarroll in Ballygiblin in their last league game last Thursday night. An explosive start saw the home team score some early goals which put them into a commanding lead at the first water break . With the whole squad getting a good run out Ballygiblin never looked back

and took some excellent scores to run out clear winners on the night . We now await details of our semi-final opponents.

On a glorious evening, last Thursday, our U12 footballers captured the Rebel Óg Shield Final in O’Connell Park. After losing to Mallow in the round robin league, only 2 weeks ago, we knew we were going to be in for a battle.

We started slowly and found ourselves 2-1 to 1 point down after 5 minutes. We steadied the ship and by the water break we were 2-1 to 0-3 in arrears. The 2nd quarter belonged to us, aided by some superb scoring and great defending, we led at half time by 2-5 to 2-2.

We came out with all guns blazing and took some lovely scores. We never let Mallow get any momentum in the second half and repelled them with some great defending and turnovers. Our forwards took some great scores again in the second half and we ran out worthy winners, Mitchelstown/Ballygiblin 7-7 Mallow 4-4.

After the game Noel O’Neill, Rebel Óg North presented the shield to our captain Michal Biegakowski.

The sheer delight was very evident on our players faces. They put in a lot of hard work since they got together post-lockdown and got their rewards. Well done to their mentors - Ryan Quirke, Denis Motherway, Denis Golden and Podge O’Neill. This team has been invited to the prestigious ‘Billy Ahearne’ tournament in Aghada on 16th October.
