Mike Magner RIP

There was an air of sadness in the village of Castletownroche over the past week, with the news of the untimely passing of one of our former players, the late Mike Magner RIP.

Mike played his first intermediate championship game for Castletownroche in 1969. The following year Mike featured in the half forward line as the team went all the way to the county final but were defeated by a very strong Cloyne team captained by the recently deceased Bunty Cahill.

Over the next few years Mike established himself as a regular on the team originally at left halfback and later as an outstanding corner back. When the team regraded to junior ranks the North Cork final was reached 1978 versus Kildorrery. This game ended level with Mike playing in his now usual corner back slot.

The selectors for the replay decided to relocate Mike to the full forward position. This proved a master stroke as we emerged victorious with Mike netting three goals in the process. After suffering disappointment with a county final loss to a Cannon Michael O’Brien trained Tracton team in 1979, Mike eventually garnered county honours when Delaney Rovers were defeated at Castlelyons in 1982.

Mike also won a county intermediate hurling league defeating old rivals Newtownshandrum in a rip roaring final at Buttevant in 1970 and a Liam Breathnach Cup in 1971 defeating Sarsfields senior team in the final.

Whilst Mike gave many sterling displays arguably his greatest was at Fitzgerald Park Fermoy in April 1972 versus Blackrock in the intermediate county quarter final, where his performance that day is still spoken of.

We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife Anne, daughters Linda, Jenny and Anne, and the extended Magner family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

COUNTY JUNIOR B FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

We continue our campaign in the county junior B football championship this Saturday, with Lough Rovers providing the opposition. The game will take place in Watergrasshill at 2pm and will be all ticket, with tickets available on the county board website. All support would be greatly appreciated.

NORTH CORK JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP ACTION

Last Sunday saw Dromina and Kilshannig face off in the North Cork Round Robin section of the hurling championship in Castletownroche. The game was played with true championship ferocity and in the end, a draw was a fair result, with Kilshannig getting a late equaliser to secure a share of the spoils. Once again, the club would like to thank all volunteers who helped on the day.

CLUB LOTTO

The next club lotto takes place on Sunday, September 26 with the jackpot now standing at €2,600. Tickets are available through local retail outlets in the village, from your usual sellers or through any club officer.

The club would like to express our appreciation to everybody who continues to support our draw.
