Well done to the U12 boys

REBEL ÓG EAST – FÉ12 LEAGUE SEMI-FINAL Watergrasshill 4-9 St. Colmcilles 0-3

A great team performance once again from our U12s who progress to a league final decider overcoming St Colmcilles last Wednesday evening. The lads worked their socks off from start to finish.

Showing great hunger, they laid down a marker early on and never relented throughout, making our opponents work very hard for possession. Great credit to St Colmcilles who tried extremely hard to get back into the game, but they came up against a red wall. Thanks to everyone who came out to show their support.

The lads have a final now to prepare for and look forward to, and we wish them the best of luck in that game where they will face Kiltha Óg who overcame Killeagh in the other semi-final.

REMEMBERING EAMONN RYAN

We had some welcome visitors to Watergrasshill last week with a TG4 documentary film crew visiting the village.

The TG4 crew were filming in and around the village, Watergrasshill National School and Felix Sarsfield Memorial Park as part of a Laochra Gael documentary due to air later this year on TG4, documenting the life and times of the great Eamonn Ryan.

The documentary visited Watergrasshill National School where Eamonn was principal and also Watergrasshill GAA where Eamonn’s love for GAA was evident. Indeed it is Eamonn’s legacy and impact on our community which will feature prominently in the program, many of his past pupils contributed to the program who not only have children of their own attending Watergrasshill National School now, but who, as boys and girls also played Sciath Na Scoil under Eamonn’s guidance, many of who are now also playing and coaching in both Glenville and Watergrasshill at adult level.

A number of Eamonn’s friends were also interviewed and throughout the day, from young to old, the love and respect for Eamonn was evident for all to see. We look forward to remembering Eamonn and marking his legacy when the documentary goes to air in December.

HARD LUCK TO OUR U15 TEAM Watergrasshill 4-09 (21) St Colman’s 3-18 (27).

Well done to our U15s who unfortunately came up short in the Rebel Óg East Fé15 final in Ballinacurra on Saturday, September 18.

A draw at the first water break (WGH 1-1 to Colmans 0-4), the game turned in the second quarter where Colmans outscored the Hill by 2-5 to 0-2, leaving us trailing by 9 points at the break.

The Hill were chasing the game from half-time and worked hard to reduce the margin Rebel Óg East Fé15 final to 4 points, but a strong Colmans final six minutes saw them win out as worthy winners by a margin of 6 points.

Squad: Fionn Fitzgerald, Ciaran Linehan, Darragh O Bric, Donnacha Forde, Conor O’Mahony, Darragh Collins, Ethan Bowman, Coran O’Neill, Bobby Kelleher, Cathal O’Brien, Dean Field, Ryan Loftus, Mike O’Riordan, Shane O’Callaghan, Leon O Se, Cathal Sheehan, Billy Ryan, Eoghan Forde, Dara O’Neill, Donnacha O’Leary, Jack Counihan and David Barry.

This has been a very good year for the U15s with a long winning streak in championship and Féile and they are unlucky not to finish the year with silverware. The lessons from the 2021 season will stand to these fine hurlers in the years to come.

Huge thanks to the coaches Darragh O’Callaghan (who brought so much extra to the coaching this year), to Ger O’Brien, Martin O’Riordan and Derek Casey who have given so much time to the lads this year and over all the years since U6. Thanks to Dermot O’Mahony and Michael Bowman for their help in so many ways throughout the 2021 season and to all the parents for their support to the team and coaches.

INTERMEDIATES PIPPED IN FINAL QUARTER Watergrasshill 2-17 (23) Inniscarra 4-13 (25)

Our intermediates were pipped at the post last weekend by Inniscarra in a Titanic battle in Grenagh on Saturday evening in the Co-Op Superstores Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship round 2.

The teams were level at the first water-break 0-6 to 1-03, but we edged ahead to lead by 1-10 to 1-07 at the half-time break. Having lead from the 16th minute, we went into the final period of the game leading by 2-14 to 1-10, however Inniscarra finished very strong, outscoring us 3-3 to 3 points in that final quarter to win on a scoreline of 2-17 to 4-13.

The club would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members and supporters of the Watergrasshill GAA Club Lotto. The lotto is a vital source of income for the running of all our teams within the club and for future development of our facilities, so we ask you to please support it if you are in a position to do so. Remember, if you’re not in you can’t win.

PITCH SIGNAGE AND ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY

As we enter a new decade, we do so with great optimism and excitement here at Watergrasshill GAA Club. Later this decade we will celebrate our centenary year, which will be a special milestone. While it’s important to celebrate the past and the history of the club, it’s also important we look forward to the future.

With this in mind, the club will shortly be undertaking a development project, to prepare the club for the future and further position ourselves at the centre of our community. Part of this project will be the development of our existing club grounds. To that end we will endeavour to raise a revenue stream from advertising, while giving businesses the opportunity to advertise their services and reach a wider audience within our community. With the playing numbers on the increase our facility will be a busy spot over the coming years, and we would love to have your name and business positioned in the hearts and minds of all those who visit on a weekly basis. If you would be interested in this opportunity to advertise and support our club, please contact Claire O’Leary on 087-6239297 or any member of the club who can provide assistance.
