67 PARKING FINES ISSUED ACROSS FERMOY MD LAST YEAR

KATIE GLAVIN

Cork County Council issued a total of 67 parking fines across the Fermoy Municipal District during 2021, a spokesperson for the council has confirmed.

In a year where the car parks within Fermoy town were free to all, a total of 36 parking tickets were issued in Fermoy town.

Mitchelstown, however, saw 31 parking fines issued by the local traffic warden.

Fines can be issued in relation to time-restricted parking, non-payment of parking charges and illegal parking.

While no parking charges are in place in Mitchelstown, and minimal parking charges existed in Fermoy last year, many motorists still faced into fines across the district.

In total, Cork County Council collected a financial sum of €2,590 via parking fines across Fermoy Municipal District during 2021.

“It should be noted that, as part of Cork County Council’s Project ACT (Activating County Towns), pay parking charges were temporarily suspended in the off-street car parks in Fermoy throughout the year,” a Cork County Council spokesperson said.

REINTRODUCTION OF CHARGES

News of the parking fines issued in 2021 comes as parking charges were reintroduced to Fermoy town following the cessation of charges during the Covid-19 pandemic.

As of Monday, January 10, charges were reintroduced to the town’s car parks at a rate of €1 per day. In the Library Carpark in Fermoy however, a rate of 50c per hour was introduced with no daily rate.

30 minutes of free parking and on-street parking between the hours of 9am and 10am, and 5pm and 6pm was also put in place as part of the reintroduction of charges, while no charges will be applied for on-street and off-street parking each Saturday morning from 9am to 1pm.

According to Cork County Council: “in some areas of high density, such as major towns, pay parking bye-laws are in effect. This is to maximise the rotation of available car parking spaces for the benefit of both businesses and citizens.”

Traffic wardens and an Garda Síochana are responsible for enforcing laws relating to illegal parking and stopping of vehicles on public roads. Fixed-charge fines range from €40 to €150 for such offences.

Once issued a parking ticket or notified by a traffic warden of an offence, an individual has 28 days to pay the fine. After these 28 days, the fine can be increased and if the fine remains unpaid after a further 28 days, court proceedings can be initiated.
