New community building for Ballyduff

KATIE GLAVIN

Planning permission has been granted to Ballyduff Muintir Na Tire for the development of a new community building consisting of a shop and café, general purpose and meeting area, and gym.

Plans for the development were submitted to Waterford City and County Council in July for the change of use of what was previously a general storage building, known locally as McCarthy’s Storehouse located at Ballinlevane East on the Fermoy approach to the village.

The new use for the building will consist of a shop or café at the ground floor level, a general purpose meeting area at the first-floor level, and a gymnasium at the second-floor level. Funding for the project has yet to be secured however.

Works are to include raising the roof level of the building by approximately 300mm, the replacement of the existing roof structure, the construction of internal partitions including the construction of a new stairwell and lift shaft.

Also included on the planning permission application is the opening up of previous blocked opes, the construction of a new seating area to the front of the building as well as an access ramp and stepped access.

The installation of a canopy was sought for over the main door to the shop/café, along with the provision of semi-permanent coverings to the remaining seating area and a level access to the rear of the building, along with all ancillary works.

In a previous article with The Avondhu, Ballyduff Upper community noted that potential development was earmarked at the site.

“The financing of this facility will require a massive fundraising effort and we are counting once again on the community for support. This facility will be our flagship project in the rejuvenation of our village and is only the start of what we can achieve by working together,” the statement at the time read.

Permission for the new development was recently granted by Waterford City and County Council, subject to ten conditions.
