Clarity needed on N73 funding following collapse of N25 funding

MARIAN ROCHE

A local TD is calling for further clarity on funding of the N73 Mitchelstown to Mallow road, following confirmation from the TII that funding for the N25 Carrigtwohill to Midleton road is not available.

Before Christmas it was confirmed that funding of €800,000 had been allocated to the Clogher Cross - Waterdyke section of the road. This is greatly reduced from the €1.5 million that had been allocated, but not drawn down, in 2021.

Cork County Council have confirmed that they are meeting with the TII on 24th January to discuss funding issues for roads across the county.

CLARITY NEEDED

Cork East TD Seán Sherlock is making calls to ensure that the funding, while “negligible”, is still actually there.

“Before Christmas we were assured of some funding on the N73 to repair the areas of Anakisha and Clogher Cross. While that funding in itself was negligible and came nowhere near what is needed to make that road safe, we do need clarity on whether that funding is even still there.

“With the N25 funding being pulled, along with no funding in official allocations for the N5 Castlemartyr-Killeagh bypass, we have to critically evaluate just where the Government is directing funds.”

“It would seem that every cent has been directed to Macroom and Dunkettle. Promises were made for the delivery of road projects, road projects that are critical for safe transport and journeys. Those promises appear to be broken now. We urgently need clarity on this and I have written, yet again, to the Minister for Transport to seek that clarity.”
