Climb with Charlie at Corrin

KATIE GLAVIN

A walk is being arranged in Corrin in support of ‘Climb with Charlie’ to raise funds for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Pieta House.

Journalist and broadcaster Charlie Bird, who was recently diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, will be taking on a climb of Croagh Patrick in aid of the two charities on April 3.

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive neurological condition that attacks the motor neurones, or nerves, in the brain and spinal cord.

The climb will be an immense challenge for Mr Bird due to his diagnosis, but he is determined to do it to highlight the vast mountains so many people have to climb in their everyday lives due to severe illness, physical and mental.

While Charlie and his close friends and family embark on their climb on the weekend of April 2nd, the campaign encourages everyone all over Ireland and indeed all over the world to get behind his efforts and arrange their own climb in their local area, with all monies raised going to two really worthy charities.

Due to Covid restrictions, health and safety, and ongoing environmental works on Croagh Patrick, the campaign cannot facilitate large numbers of people on Croagh Patrick on April 2nd.

Therefore, Charlie is encouraging people to climb in their local area, and to keep on climbing the mountains of their personal battles.

Recently, Mr Bird was interviewed on The Late Late Show about his diagnosis and health, which struck a chord with the nation and many prominent figures have since backed the fundraising campaign.

Vicky Phelan, Daniel O’Donnell, Mary McAleese and Davy Fitzgerald have all extended their support to the former RTÉ Correspondent since.

Locally, a group in Fermoy has formed for a walk in Corrin, according to individual abilities, in support of the cause on April 2.

More details will follow on the local fundraiser.
