Free WiFi being considered for Fermoy and Mitchelstown

MARIAN ROCHE

Mitchelstown and Fermoy could be looking at free WiFi in the very near future, as Cork County Council undertakes surveys to see where they will be installing WiFi access points across the county.

Under the WiFi4EU initiative, the council has access to €120,000 through EU and Irish government funding. The decision where to provide the free WiFi has not yet been made, however, the local authority has a deadline of August to get infrastructure up and running in order to get the funding.

To-date, they have undertaken surveys in Mitchelstown, Fermoy, Bantry, Cobh, Midleton, Camden Fort Meagher in Crosshaven, Charleville and Bandon to assess where the opportunities lie for the scheme.

The purpose of the WiFi4EU funding is to promote free connectivity in public spaces such as parks, squares, public buildings, libraries, health centres and museums across Europe through the installation of WiFi equipment in ‘the centres of community life’.
