The Avondhu

Blackwater Side

By C Ó Díomasaigh

Sitting by Black water side Looking out to Glenabo I hear the water o’er The Rock It’s gentle ebb and flow

I hear the birds chatter aloud The Robin, finch and heron It is a place of retreat A little piece of Heaven

I hear and see the salmon leap Gracefully from the river Its loud splash, gone so fast One only gets a glimmer

The noble kingfisher Like a bullet scans the deep dark water In the light of day To seize its prey A voracious spotter

Ghosts of men of the plain Stroll her ancient banks For the beauty they see before them They give the Lord their thanks

In life they loved their town Fhear Maí Their ghosts still there linger Their spirits roam this glorious place On the banks of Blackwater river.
