Controlled electrical works

(Source: Safe Electric)

Controlled Electrical Works are electrical works that should be certified if carried out by a registered electrical contractor (REC).

Most electrical works in domestic, commercial and industrial environments are covered under the scope of Controlled Electrical Works; these works are defined as electrical works that should be certified if carried out by a REC. For more information please see decision paper (CER/09/009).

Individuals who are not registered who carry out electrical work which falls under the scope of Controlled Electrical Works are not required to certify that work.

However, the person on whose behalf the Controlled Electrical Works are being carried out are obliged to request Safe Electric to carry out a third party inspection of the works completed. This is to provide assurances that the installation has been carried out and tested in line with the relevant Technical Rules and standards, ET101: 2008.

Minor works as outlined in ANNEX 63B Section 2B of ET 101: 2008 rules fall outside the scope of Controlled Electrical Works.

However, it is important that minor electrical works are in compliance with the National Wiring Rules and from a safety perspective it is important that these works only be completed by competent individuals.

RESTRICTED ELECTRICAL WORKS

It is illegal for anyone other than a Registered Electrical Contractor (REC) to carry out most electrical work in domestic premises as most electrical works are covered under the scope of Restricted Electrical Works.
