From lockdown to rain down

Twelve months ago we were all in lockdown and golf courses everywhere were closed, a year later it’s our unpredictable weather that has caused our closure.

The amount of rain that has fallen since the beginning of the New Year has been both torrential and excessive. The post-Christmas festive calendar ended last week with the closure of the course from Bank Holiday Monday due to the heavy rain which fell from Sunday, January 2.

The decision to close for the remainder of the week while disappointing was a very necessary one in order to give the saturated ground time to dry. While it was hoped that the course would reopen for competition on Saturday last unfortunately the heavy rain on the previous Thursday put the kibosh on any chance of that happening. Members were notified via the BRS that a course inspection would take place on Monday morning.

Last weekend we did not see much of an improvement in the weather conditions. On Saturday and Sunday some very heavy showers and even hailstones rained down upon us so it was no surprise to find the course remained closed. Hopefully this coming Sunday and Monday we will be able to resume our weekly competitions.

POST-CHRISTMAS COMPETITIONS

A total of nine competitions had been arranged to take place over the holiday period, due to the wet weather we lost three from the programme, when your take our damp unpredictable climate into consideration we didn’t fare too badly in the scheme of things.

RESULTS OF THREEBALL SCRAMBLE DECEMBER 29TH

There was a great turnout of both members and visitors for the threeball scramble, and in first place was Committee of Management Treasurer Lar Fant (9), Jason Naughton (18) and Ger Hurley (12) 43.1 nett. Second position went to Shane Keating (15), Michael Gorman (15) and Marin Gorman (28) 43.4 nett and in third were Don O’Mahony (11), Kevin Cotter (12) and Jim Sheehan (20) 43.7. It was a good week for Jason Naughton as he was also on the team who were in second position on 27th December. Well done to all the prize-winners.

THURSDAY GOLF

Following their Christmas break the ladies are due to return to the fairways this morning weather permitting. The gents had hoped to resume last week but the weather was not conducive. Hopefully, we are all out on the course today 13th January enjoying this very popular weekly scramble.

MEN’S CLUB COMPETITION

As outlined above the men’s club also lost their first singles competition of the year due to the closure of the course last week. Hopefully, this coming weekend the weather will be kinder and the arranged competitions will run to schedule.

OMICRON

This time last year we were all on lockdown due to the pandemic and lived with the hope that we would be clear of Covid-19 in 2022. Alas, we are now experiencing the difficulties that the new variant

Omicron has brought. We again urge all our members to take care and follow all the guidelines, we owe it to all those in the health services who are working under

immense pressure. These are not faceless people, they are our fellow club members, family and neighbours; we owe it to them to do the right thing. Stay safe everyone.
