The day Oscar came to ‘town’

Written by Pat Lane

In those precious days of yore, Times of stories and folklore, We all converged to the high street,

Without a moment left to spare,

Crowds flocking to New Square,

‘An Gardai ‘they pounded the beat.

A wonderful day in November, The twenty fifth I do remember,

Great days had at the amusements,

Songs and ‘craic’ in the local, Everyone was quite vocal, Got to ‘Davy’s Field’ with enthusement. (sic)

Drizzling rain on this mucky terrain,

Ankle deep but we didn’t refrain,

From having a laugh on every ride,

The bumpers and the carousel, Lovely memories that I prey tell,

From the boats I’d a pain in my side.

Pull the rope to great height, Dan would shout ‘hold on tight’ ,

Over the top to see Galty Mar, When the brake was applied, Long board pressed underside, A thrill that touched our very core.

From the clouds came downpours, Clambering stampede for indoors,

Bingo session just about to begin,

A timber card filled with numbers,

Bottle tops reduced the blunders,

Everyone to their own from here in.

Raise my hand, give a shout, Hey check out my full house, That’s the Jackpot won for today,

Suddenly day turns to night, On comes our favourite chipper light,

Time for fries in a bag or a tray.

What’s on the menu please Trish,

Highly recommending Pa key’s fish,

A new film at a cinema called Star,

Wondering what would be best,

It’s One flew over the cuckoo’s nest,

So good it was awarded an Oscar.

Just like that the day ends, Been full of twists and bends, St. George’s I still have to visit, From an owl comes a hoot,

As quickly as possible I scoot, So fast I even break the speed limit.

But when ails said and done, By god what a fantastic run, The seventies were magic per say,

To live in or around Mitchelstown,

A time when everything went down,

On the wonderful “St. Fanahan’s Day”.
