Offer made for new Medical Officer for Fermoy respite facility

The HSE has confirmed to Cork East TD, Seán Sherlock that an offer has been made to a replacement Medical Officer for the former St Francis Welfare Home in Fermoy.

News of this follows a recent article in The Avondhu which outlined how locals experienced difficulties in securing respite care at the Rathealy Road facility, having had bookings cancelled due to a lack of GP cover for the summer months.

Medical Officer cover was secured for the facility until July 29, and the HSE has now confirmed that admissions to the facility are currently being accepted.

“Medical Officer cover has been secured until 29th July. An offer has been made to a replacement Medical Officer from that date; however, confirmation of acceptance is awaited,” a spokesperson for the HSE said.

Deputy Sherlock also recently brought the issue before the Dáil, raising the issue with the Minister of State.

“I will continue to seek updates on the recruitment of a Medical Officer and the continuation of respite care. It’s vitally important that our facilities such as this continue to provide the requisite care,” Deputy Sherlock said.
