Rathcormac footpath works ‘urgently needed’

KATIE GLAVIN

A footpath or defined walking space is ‘urgently needed’ between Gleann Bhríde Estate in Rathcormac and Glenville Junction on the R614, according to local councillor, William O’Leary.

At a recent meeting of the Fermoy Municipal District, Cllr O’Leary placed urgency on the matter, stating that many young families are using the road to walk and often have to navigate around trucks and cars when walking to school.

Tabling a motion on the matter, the councillor requested that any interim measures to enhance safety in the area also be put in place.

“I wanted to stress the urgency of the issue and ask if anything can be done to expediate this,” Cllr O’Leary said.

In reply, Brendan O’Gorman, Senior Engineer with Cork County Council, noted that footpath works connecting Gleann Bhríde Estate and Glenville Junction are planned.

“There are a number of planning applications granted between the estate and the crossroads that will include for footpaths and dished entrances along their site frontage.

“Some of these have commenced already. We will work around these and our future footpath programme to complete the request,” Mr O’Gorman said.
