Antisocial behaviour needs a ‘dialogue’ to find solution

MARIAN ROCHE

Cork County Council are currently working with Gardaí in Mitchelstown to hopefully resolve issues of antisocial behaviour on the basketball court between Árd Mhuilean and Luí na Gréine on the north side of the town.

In May, a request had been made to erect a boundary wall by Cllr Deirdre O’Brien. June’s meeting indicated that the council are amenable to finding a positive resolution.

Municipal District Officer, Pauline Moriarty told the elected members that she was discussing with residents in the area, as well as the Housing Department of Cork County Council, what was the best use of the basketball court which is reportedly not being used for its intended purpose.

She stressed that she is “not talking about removing anything”, but at this stage to only “open a dialogue to see what is the best solution to what is essentially an antisocial issue.”

Cllr Kay Dawson agreed with Ms Moriarty, and went further saying that she would like to see a mutli-faceted approach drawing other services, such as local youth services, into the discussion, and to see if a solution could be found that way.
