A garda ‘ Day of Action’ was held last Thursday in the district of Fermoy, where multiple arrests and seizures were made in the district. With footage being widely shared across social media of Garda operations taking place, Sergeant Daniel Cowman spoke with TheAvondhu on the action taking place under Superintendent Powell of Fermoy Garda Station.

“We conducted a number of high-visibility patrols on Thursday and Friday morning; we often have these days of action. The purpose is to present visibility to the public, about being out and about and to be seen. We’re targeting everything, every type of offence.”

The operation was scheduled to take place from 7am on Thursday morning until 7am the following morning. A large number of Gardaí were witnessed in the forecourt of one local motorway service station shortly before 9am with at least two jeep-like vehicles present.

RAIDS

Shortly after 9am, videos began circulating showing Gardaí knocking down doors in at least two different estates in Mitchelstown, and one video shows a man in shorts being apprehended by Gardaí outside the front door of a house.

In the course of the 24 hours, Gardaí executed searches under warrant of four properties and searched 16 separate people under the Misuse of Drugs Act. As a result, a large quantity of suspected cocaine was seized with a value of €7,000. A further seven charges were made against individuals for personal drug use involving cannabis and cocaine, and another arrest was made for multiple incidents of criminal damage. Stolen property was also recovered in the course of the day.

Further to exclusively Garda operations, there were a number of multi-agency checkpoints in the area, where Gardaí worked with the likes of Revenue and the Traffic Unit to detect crime. In the course of these checkpoints Gardai arrested one driver under the influence of drugs, and another vehicle was seized for having no insurance or tax.

Sergeant Cowman said the force find the ‘Days of Action’ to be “very effective”.

“We‘ve great results. We’re targeting everything, and every type of offence.”
