Multi-disciplinary team for Fermoy Town Centre Renewal Project to convene

KATIE GLAVIN

A multi- disciplinary team has been identified within the council regarding the €1.925 million Fermoy Town Centre Renewal Project and is to convene in the coming weeks to advance the public realm elements of the project.

The news on the Category 2 Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF) project for the town follows an update issued by council officials at the Fermoy Municipal District meeting last week.

According to Munici

pal District Officer Pauline Moriarty, the multi-disciplinary team will develop designs and proposals and prepare planning applications and permissions to allow for a Category 1 RRDF funding application thereafter.

“The other elements of the project, which cannot be expanded on currently as they are commercially sensitive, will be revealed in due course. Public Consultation/Stakeholder Engagement will form an important part of this project and the public will be consulted/informed at all stages as the project progresses,” Ms Moriarty said.

TOWN CENTRE REGENERATION

The Fermoy Town Centre project is being led by Cork County Council in partnership with the Avondhu Blackwater Partnership.

The total cost of the Fermoy project is € 1,925,000, with € 1,540,000 awarded under the Rural Regeneration Development Fund, and Cork County Council to fund the remainder.

Under the project, adaptive and sustainable reuse of historic and vacant town centre buildings will be targeted along with key public realm and amenity enhancements which will support the economic, social, cultural and physical renewal of Fermoy.

The project is to deliver large-scale regeneration in the town through targeted interventions to revitalise the town centre and drive it forward as a vibrant, liveable, diverse and competitive centre of scale.

Local councillors in attendance at last week’s meeting widely welcomed the news with several requesing a meeting between public representatives and the team working on the project, so as to be fully informed on the proposed works.
