Connolly Street ‘taken-over’ by bins

KATIE GLAVIN

Concerns have been raised recently as the number of bins located at a flowerbed area on Connolly Street, Fermoy, appears to be increasing.

Such concerns follow articles in The Avondhu highlighting several unsightly bins located on the slipway to the River Blackwater from Brian Boru Square.

Some twenty or more bins were seen stationed at the flowerbed area on Connolly Street, located directly across from the Fermoy Library.

While it is understood, that smaller numbers of bins were located there in the past, it is believed that the number is now gradually increasing.

“There was a flower bed there, now it’s all taken over by bins. Fermoy would want to get its act together,” one frustrated local told TheAvondhu.

BINS TO BE HELD WITHIN PREMISES

According to Cork County Council Waste Management Bye-Laws (2019): “containers used for the presentation of kerbside waste shall be maintained in such condition and state of repair that waste placed therein will not be a source of nuisance or litter.”

The same bye-laws also state that ‘containers’ used for waste presentation should be held within the premises of where the waste is produced.

“They shall not be stored on a roadway, footway, footpath, or any other public place unless the location has been expressly authorised in writing by an authorised person,” the bye-laws add.

Regarding collection days, the bye-laws note that bins should not be presented earlier than 6pm the day beforehand.

“All containers used for the presentation of kerbside waste and any uncollected waste shall be removed from any roadway, footway, footpath or any other public place no later than 12 midnight on the designated waste collection day, unless an alternative arrangement has been approved by Cork County Council,” the bye-laws conclude.
