Ballindangan Monday Morning Club outing

On Monday, 13th June last, the much anticipated outing for members of Ballindangan Monday Morning Club took place. We were fortunate to have a dry day and after a 3 year lapse Gerdy Murphys bus was easily filled.

To maintain the energy levels our first stop while heading north was the Horse and Jockey. There awaiting us were freshly made scones with copious amounts of tea and coffee. Our next stop off was to the renowned Gash Garden just outside the picturesque Castletown in Co. Laois. Named after the nearby river.

Gash Gardens was the brainchild of the late Noel Keenan. His daughter Mary along with her husband Ross have continued his dream and have developed it further along with a nursery. Mary gave a wonderful guided tour of what everyone agreeded was an absolutely stunning garden. While not so long ago cows grazed the 4 acre field now turned garden, today the only 4 legged creatures we saw was Neddy the donkey, the four Coney pet pigs and Megan the pet goat. After a welcome cup of tea members purchased some plants from the terrific selection on offer.

Next stop was to Portlaoise where members had free time to relax or sample some of the fine retail shops in the town. For our evening meal we chose the highly recommended Fiacri Restaurant in Roscrea. We were served a really delicious meal, in superb surroundings by a warm and friendly staff. Thanks to Ailish and Enda Hennessy who opened their restaurant on a Monday especially for us.

Arriving back safely to Ballindangan, everyone agreeded it was a great day and it was wonderful to be able to go on such trips again.
