Fermoy in the spotlight once again as regatta returns

JOHN AHERN

Clubs from all over Ireland will take part in this Sunday's 500 metre sprint regatta in Fermoy. For rowers, it's a welcome return to action, at what is one of the best courses in the country, and for spectators this free event will see 175 races run off on the Blackwater course, from 8am until 6.30pm.

DESTINATION FERMOY

Getting to a regatta isn't just a case of 'throwing a few things in a gear bag' - it's an elaborate and complex exercise involving the transport of boats worth thousands of euro.

From Saturday - in some cases, Friday evening - boats, their crews and a team of back-up personnel will arrive in Fermoy. While some will elect to arrive 'on the day', it's always best practice to get to a regatta venue in good time and have everything spot on in advance of the starter's pistol.

A PLEASURABLE EXPERIENCE

Spending time in Fermoy is never a chore, as the venue lends itself to an enjoyable day out. A town centre location, ease of access, proximity of clubhouse to the river and excellent viewing areas are just some of the reasons why rowers love visiting Fermoy.

BOOST TO THE LOCAL ECONOMY

For a variety of reasons, Fermoy isn't the tourist hub it should be - the fact that it no longer hosts major angling festivals is another negative. Against such a background, staging a regatta that attracts hundreds of people to the town is all the more important.

Service stations, shops, restaurants and other retail outlets can expect a considerable spin-off from the day - at a time when these enterprises are facing any number of challenges, this cash injection is very welcome.
