Ned scores big in Murphy Cup

Ned Finn proved beyond all doubt this past weekend why he was golfer of the year 2021 when he secured an emphatic win in our prestigious Murphy Cup competition 2022 on Saturday, 25th June.

Played in a v par format, Ned won 10 up – a remarkable score for any golfer. An unseasonable, cool breeze and intermittent showers failed to dampen his hunger and enthusiasm for a well-deserved victory. It is a fitting destination for the club’s oldest trophy which was first contested in 1944 (when it was also won by a club member of the same surname). The annual competition remains supported and sponsored by the third generation of the Murphy family.

Ned’s weekend also saw him involved in interclub success on both Friday and Sunday (see below). Congratulations Ned and well done! Thank you to the green staff who had our course in such good conditions for the event.

INTERCLUB COMPETITION

Our mixed foursomes had a successful but uncomfortable 3 – 2 win v Tipperary GC on Friday, 24th June. When I say “uncomfortable” I refer to the wet, windy and bitterly cold conditions experienced by the players and their mentor Michael English. It was truly a match endured rather than enjoyed by both teams and due credit must be afforded to all for representing their respective clubs in such atrocious conditions.

The contest ended when Jamie Finn sank the winning putt on the raised 15th green – both he and his playing partner, Rita O’Brien seemed very glad to be heading to the comfort of the clubhouse afterwards.

Success for Mitchelstown GC was achieved again on Sunday, 26th June when our Pierce Purcell team defeated Carrick-on Suir 3 ½ - 1 ½ to reach the East Munster area final under the mentorship of Ned Finn and Kieran Dennehy. The area final is at home v Thurles GC on Sat., 2nd July at 2pm.

Our next encounter in the All-Ireland four-ball series also takes place this coming week away v Cahir GC on Friday 1st July under the watchful eye of Chris Ablett assisted by Pat Cleary.

The attendance of any members free to come and support our club on any of the match days is hugely appreciated by our players and their mentors who give freely of their time to represent Mitchelstown Golf Club.
