Carraig na bhFear 1-16 Youghal 2-5

Carraig na bhFear claimed the points in this Ml. O’Connor Motor Factors sponsored East Cork JAFC Round Robin – Group 3 game at a wet and windy Castlelyons on Saturday evening last. Played with the strong

wind across the field, Carraig na bhFear elected to play with its advantage in the opening half and were lucky to be on level terms with Youghal at the break, as they wasted a lot of chances.

Carraig na bhFear went into a five point lead before the seasiders opened their scoring, a goal from the industrious Alan Frahill O’Connor, by the 8th minute. Prior to this, Carraig had points from James Forde, Paul O’Keeffe and Billy Connolly.

Frahill O’Connor added a point a minute later following good work by wing forward, Andrew Joyce. Forde converted another 30m free with Brendan Murphy getting the biggest cheer of the evening when his kick, looked going wide, but tailed at the last second to split the black spot on the Youghal crossbar.

Great teamwork involving the legendary Timmy Geaney and Tadhg O’Donoghue sent Dave Sweeney through for another sweet point for the Carraig men. James O’Mahoney pulled a point back for Youghal which was cancelled out following another pointed free from Forde. Youghal finished the half in style when they bagged 1-1, the point from Enda Cronin and the goal from James O’Mahoney, following a turnover, to let the sides all even at the break.

NO DENYING CARRAIG

Youghal started like they had finished the opening half when Keith McCarthy put them a point ahead inside the opening minute. However, Carraig, getting the upper hand outfield, kept Youghal scoreless for twenty-six minutes of the second half. During this purple patch, the Carraig men kicked six points, a couple of note, as they ran at the Youghal defence and were aided by a swirling wind from time to time.

Forde added four points to his tally as Timmy Geaney and Sweeney also added valuable points. Enda Cronin kicked his second point for Youghal four minutes from time, but Carraig na bhFear kept the pressure on and finished with further points from half-time sub, Colm Murphy and Connelly to claim the points from this round robin game.
