Semi-final loss

Last Sunday, Mitchelstown Ballygiblin were represented by an U11 team comprising of 5 U10s and 10 U11 hurlers in a Community Games semi-final v Ballincollig.

The conditions in Ballincollig were perfect for the match however Ballincollig displayed excellent skills, teamwork and went into an early lead. While our boys were always chasing the game they showed great heart and spirit and were level on scoring in the third and fourth quarters.

A scoring highlight for our boys was an individual effort by Rory McCarthy where he double tapped over 2 Ballincollig players before finishing to the net. Our boys were very disappointed with the result however their mood improved quickly when they were treated to some food nearby.

U9s put in a great run on a brilliant morning on Saturday in Glanworth. We played two competitive matches with great performances all round. It was great to get the games in before the poor weather came. Well done boys!

U13S

On Saturday we had a home game versus St. Vincent’s. In an exciting first half we played with a strong wind and settled quickly. Odhran pointed a free won by Sean. St. Vincent’s got a goal and a point from play. Odhran then scored a goal from long range. Rory had to make a couple of good saves. Ethan had a good shot saved. Fionn caught a high ball and goaled. Xavier pointed a 65 and Odhran scored a free to leave us up 2-04 to 1-02 at half time.

St. Vincent’s started the second half well scoring two quick goals and a few points before Fionn and Odhran scored two points from distance. In an exciting last quarter St Vincent’s came out on top.

Jake scored a great goal after running in from midfield with the ball. The backs defended admirably but a couple of late goals turned the game St Vincent’s way to leave final score Ballygiblin 2-05 St. Vincent’s 5-05.

Team: Rory McCarthy, Cormac Hoye, Jason Holland, Jack Dalton, Danny Gorry, Jake Farrissey 1-00, Eoin Luddy, Micheal Walsh, Xavier Motherway 0-01, Fionn Moher 1-01, Odhran O’Farrell 1-03, Ethan Molan, Daire Burke, Sean Hennessey, Michael Murphy and Sean O’Sullivan.

U17 HURLERS HAVE NARROW DEFEAT TO ST. COLMCILLE’S

Last Friday evening our U17 hurlers played their final league game away to St. Colmcille’s. The match was played in atrocious conditions with driving wind and rain, with a few lads missing due to other commitments. It was going to be a tough battle for the lads. Ballygiblin played with the wind in the first half and, with the help of a goal and some frees, were ahead at half time 1-04 to 0-3. However, playing against the wind in the second half proved very difficult. It was very difficult to get any distance on the ball.

St. Colmcille’s took advantage of the wind and got 6 points from play and frees. The final whistle was a welcome relief for everyone. Unfortunately the lads lost out by 2 points.

Fair play to all the lads who put in a brilliant performance on such a miserable night. Big thank you to all the parents and hardy spectators who travelled to Carrignavar and braved the wind and rain.

Team: Oisin Hanrahan, Fionn Hanrahan, Eoin Flynn, Cathal Walsh, Eoin Brenock, Robbie O’Sullivan, Kevin Cotter, Eoghan Geary, Simon Whelan, Sean Barry, Niall Kenneally, Caoimhin O’Gorman, Daniel Whelan, Eoin Kirwin, James Keane, Clement Motherway, Paul Flynn.

Out of the 6 games in the league Ballygiblin won 4 matches only beaten by both Whitechurch and St. Colmcille’s by 2 points. This is a brilliant result and sets them up strong for the championship which begins in July.

They finished 3rd in the league and as a result will have home advantage in the plate final against Lisgoold. This is due to be played on 10 July in Ballygiblin. Their championship fixtures are Friday, 22 July at home to Whitechurch and Friday 5 August at home to Killavullen.
