15 the magic number for Fermoy Ladies Intermediate team

Our Intermediate team travelled to Youghal GC on Sunday last for the second round of the Inter Club competition. Having had a bye in the first round the team, under the management of Mary Lysaght and Deirdre Butler, put a considerable amount of time into practicing and it certainly showed on the day with the three matches required to secure victory being won on the fifteenth hole, no mean feat when playing away. The conditions were very tough with a strong wind from the sea and some very heavy intermittent downpours, which flooded both greens and bunkers.

The first win for Fermoy was earned by Aine O’Grady who was second to tee off with Martha Brennan securing the second win much to the delight of our supporters. With two matches in and in Fermoy’s favour all eyes were on Elaine Murphy, as she played up the same hole and she duly returned the winning point for us. The cheers from the Fermoy supporters could be heard over the wind.

The two other ladies on the team were Carol Griffin who was first out and was going down the 19th when called in and Yvonne Stephenson who was last to tee off for Fermoy. Thanks to all in Youghal GC for the courtesy shown to our ladies when arranging practice times and for matches played in a most sporting manner. Well done to all the team and managers, thanks to the caddies and the members who came to support our team. Best of luck to you all in the next round when you play West Waterford.

Annette Twomey wins Bermingham’s Gift Gallery competition

There was an excellent turn out for last week’s competition which was very kindly sponsored by Bermingham’s Gift Gallery. The Sunday players were yet again met with very tough conditions with a strong blustery wind that never let up. Our main day Monday, had sunshine to rival the Costa del Sol with just a little wind at times. As in previous weeks we had an extra alternate day on Wednesday due to the Inter Club matches, it was dull to begin with although warm with just a light breeze wafting in the air however, the sun broke through at midday and the temperatures rose considerably.

Those playing the competition said they found the pin positions difficult and allied to the speed of the greens. This did make putting a challenge, nevertheless despite the tricky greens the scores returned were excellent. Two members of the Ladies’ committee featured in top two placings with the overall winner being our ‘Get into Golf’ co-ordinator and very consistent golfer Annette Twomey (28) who scored a super 5 up, just edging ladies’ club PRO Audrey Cremen (24) into second on 4up. Lady Captain Siobhan on behalf of all the members thanks Edward Sheehan and his family for their very generous sponsorship. The full results are as follows.

BERMINGHAM’S GIFT GALLERY 18 HOLE V/PAR

1st Annette Twomey (28) 5up, 2nd Audrey Cremen (24) 4up, 3rd Yvonne Stephenson (23) 4up b/9, 4th Amy Edwards (28) 4up, 5th Mabel O Keeffe (36) 3up b/6.

The thirty one members who arrived for the scramble last week had a beautiful summer’s day this added greatly to the enjoyment of the morning. First prize was kindly sponsored by Mary Wall, so a big thank you to Mary from all the ladies who attended. In first place with a great score of 28 nett were Catherine Murphy, Mary Kennedy and Bridget Joyce who were pipped by .1, the team of Mary Nyhan, Marie Walsh and Nuala Rice. Third place went to Irene Murphy, Joan Moloney and Josephine Kappis 28.6 nett. Fourth and fifth positions were also separated by just .1 and the teams were Mary Lysaght, Breda O’Connor and Anne Walsh 30.4 nett and Brede Walsh, Vice President Eileen O’Sullivan and Eileen O’Neill 30.5 nett.

MEMBERS RISE EARLY FOR THE DAWN CHORUS

On the Summer Solstice, Tuesday 21st June, nearly sixty members rose to the challenge and arrived in the car park at the crack of dawn for the nine hole ‘ Dawn Chorus’ scramble. The early morning air was cool but the scattered showers mentioned in the forecast thankfully did not descend upon Corrin’s green glens.

By 5.50am all players were at their designated tees, waiting with club and ball in hand for the sound of the starter shotgun. President John O’Sullivan, on behalf of all those taking part thanks our neighbour Neilus Cashman for providing the ‘ Big Bang’ to get the round underway and it certainly helped wake a few of us up.

Following play, we were provided with a lovely breakfast cooked to perfection by Monica and her team and steaming cups of tea and coffee served by Mattie in the bar. Thanks to each and every one of you for also rising early to cater for the very hungry players many of whom did not have time for breakfast before leaving home.

President John, Lady Captain Siobhan and Men’s captain Gerry thanked the social committee for all the work they put into organising the very successful event, also thanked, were Ryan’s SuperValu, Glanmire and Clonakilty Foods, who very kindly sponsored the prizes and breakfast, respectively. Everyone who attended had a great morning and the “craic” as they say was mighty. The winning team on the front nine were Niall Cremen, Denis Goggin and Pauline Hyland and in second was the ‘two ball’ of chairman Seamus Feehan and Carrie Gormley.

In first place on the back nine were Paudie Scanlon, Ambrose Mitchel and Mary Barry just ahead of the team of Raymond Ennis, Mary Lysaght and Paddy Kenny.

FRIDAY NIGHT MIXED

Our traditional Friday night social mixed was cancelled due to the heavy rain which never relented all day.

Leading organisers Liam and Eileen had to make the correct decision to send out the message early so regular attendees of which there are many, could make other plans for the evening.
