League Shield win for Minor hurlers

Kilworth Araglen Og 5-15 Watergrasshill 0-18

The old saying that “goals win games” certainly rang true in Glanworth on last Tuesday night week as Kilworth Araglen Óg picked up the Fe17 Div. 1 Hurling League Shield for 2022. When these teams met in the league phase in midMarch, a cold and blustery day led to a low scoring 1-07 apiece draw. Last week’s game was played on a perfect evening for hurling with little enough breeze on well prepared surface and both teams took advantage of this in the early stages.

Our lads started well and raced into an early 4 points to 1 lead with scores from Pierce Riordan (2), Liam Og Hegarty and Oisin Farrell Carey. Both sides played a nice brand of hurling and Watergrasshill’s running off the shoulder started to pay some dividends as they scored 5 of the next 6 points to get back into the game. Kilworth Araglen Óg were under a little bit of pressure at this stage but a great individual goal from Eoghan Leddy settled the nerves again. Eoghan won a long clearance near the sideline in the scoreboard corner before cutting in along the 14 yard line from where he gave the keeper no chance to put us back in front. It was tit for tat from here to the interval and the sides went to the break with Kilworth Araglen Óg leading by 1-10 to 0-11.

The early stages of the second half continued in much the same vein as both sides added early scores. Liam Og Hegarty and Pierce Riordan added points before Liam Og, who had been moving very well at midfield, was red carded for an off the ball incident following some close attention from his opposite number. Down a player of Liam Og’s ability, our lads refused to panic and some shrewd moves from the side-line mitigated his loss around the middle of the pitch. Pierce Riordan, who had been a constant thorn in the Watergrasshill defence, scored 2 excellent goals following probing runs through the middle before Eoghan Leddy scored an almost carbon copy of his first goal to put the game out of reach for the lads from east Cork. Conor Twomey added a trademark point from the right touchline before Thomás Maher who excelled in the free taking duties in the second half, won a great long ball over his markers head before billowing the net for our 5th goal.

Following the game, Rebel Og North secretary Denis Twomey presented the shield to Kilworth Araglen Og captain for the evening Thomas Maher.

Commiserations to the Kilworth Araglen Og Fé14 hurlers and footballers who had to give best to Bride Rovers and Glenville in their respective Shield finals recently.

GO GAMES FOCUS - U8S

It’s been a busy start to the season for our U8s who have already had 8 outings (games and blitzes) across both codes this year. The boys have been training hard in their regular Monday and Thursday slots and have been improving steadily each week. Its particularly pleasing to see them transferring the skills that are worked on in training to the games.

The focus this year for this age group remains firmly on enjoyment as they continue to learn the basic skills of both codes. Our most recent outings were against Mitchelstown Ballygiblin in hurling and Glenville in football and all 19 players available played across both outings. The boys will be in action again this Saturday against Lisgoold in a hurling challenge game in Kilworth at 10am.

CUL CAMP

The Kilworth Araglen Óg Cul Camp will be held in Kilworth GAA Grounds between Monday, July 4th and Friday, July 8th this year. Whilst we missed out on the 2020 camp due to Covid, last year’s camp was a huge success both in relation to the numbers of boys and girls who attended and the number of coaches who made themselves available to run the camp.

This year’s camp is now full with almost 190 boys and girls signed up for the week which will also see 41 coaches take time off work or give up part of their holidays to ensure the camp runs smoothly. Hopefully the weather will be kind to us and here’s hoping that everyone has a great week.
