Boil Water Notice finally lifted in Killavullen

KATIE GLAVIN

After almost 11 months of waiting, the Boil Water Notice put in place on residents in Killavullen has finally been lifted. First issued on May 2 2022, the notice was originally issued due to high levels of turbidity in the borehole supply.

Uisce Éireann has now notified customers supplied by the Killavullen Public Water Supply that the Boil Water Notice has finally been lifted with immediate effect, following consultation undertaken with the HSE.

Operation and compliance experts with Uisce Éireann worked with colleagues in Cork County Council to carry out the necessary upgrade works to enable the notice to be lifted.

Pat Britton, Uisce Éireann Operations Lead, again thanked the people of Killavullen for their patience, cooperation and assistance during the perios of notice.

“Uisce Éireann wishes to thank the people of Killavullen for their patience, cooperation and assistance during this Boil Water Notice. We are grateful to the media, elected representatives and members of the public who shared these updates,” he said.

“We are also working on a permanent solution to ensure a more reliable water supply. However, until then, additional Boil Water Notices may need to be issued to protect public health”.

Cllr Frank O’Flynn welcomed the update, sayng it was “great news” and “very important” for both the residents and the farming community of Killavullen.

“Uisce Éireann are in the process of connecting the supply to Mallow and I will keep pursuing the matter, in order to meet the present and future needs of the people of Killavullen”.

FUTURE WORKS

Some 810 customers were affected by the ongoing notice in the Killavullen area, with some taking matters into their own hands and installing water filtration systems in their homes at their own expense.

December 2022 saw the announcement of upgrade works at the reservoir and treatment plant in Killavullen, with the aim of the short-term works giving the plant more durability in managing turbidity events following periods of heavy rainfall.

To safeguard the water supply in the long term, Uisce Éireann is now progressing with plans to connect Killavullen to the Mallow Public Water Supply Scheme, replacing and decommissioning the local water supply and ensuring safer, more reliable drinking water now and into the future.

A design and build contractor has been engaged to progress the design of a permanent solution. Following the design phase, construction is expected to commence before the end of Q2 2023.

The Uisce Éireann Customer Contact Centre (1800 278 278) is available to answer customer queries in relation to the lifting of this notice, where needed. Further information is available on www.water.ie
