€44,000 granted for works at Mount Melleray

MARIAN ROCHE

Mount Melleray Abbey near Cappoquin has received a grant of €44,000 to carry out works under the 2023 Historic Structures Fund. It is one of 95 Heritage projects across the country to benefit from a total fund of €4.5 million announced this week.

The funding is intended to address issues of water entering the building at the south gable of the public chapel, and to address an outbreak of dry rot. The funds will also go to towards works to reduce groundwater flows towards the main Abbey buildings by locating and cleaning historic drainage.

In Cork, a total of €160,000 is proposed over 2023 and 2024 for works at the Granary Buildings at Mallow Castle. This is for works including repairs to the roofs, protection of the windows, chimney repair, and vegetation removal.

In Limerick, local funding includes €23,500 for a building at 3 Wolfe Tone Street, Kilmallock, for re-roofing of the existing natural slate roof.

In Tipperary, a number of projects in the surrounding area were granted funding including €37,500 for roof and chimney repairs to Alta Villa on the Cashel Road, Barnora. Another €45,000 was granted for a full repair of the roofs at Suir Mills on the Cashel Road, Barnora, Cahir. In Ballylooby, €10,000 was granted towards conservation works at a house at Peahill. The proposal is to “reinstate historically-referenced windows and refurbish surviving windows on the original dwelling”, amongst other works.
