RATS

We won’t try to convert people to the benefits of rats - the battle is already lost, we fear.

However, it is heartening to see such a loud response from the public against what could be a threat to wildlife this week in Fermoy. It’s another example of where people are starting to question and query and wonder about what is happening with our environment, and what we do without thinking.

For a long time, most people did not question the wisdom of spraying poison each year on dandelions. The abundance of daffodils are pretty, but only to us. The bee wants the dandelion and, to be fair, we’re getting better at letting them flourish for a few short weeks, harming no one.

It used to be commonplace to sprinkle the land with rat poison and slug poison, with no thought whatsoever as to what impact this has. Now a rat might not be as cute as a field mouse, but that doesn’t make him any less of one of God’s creatures. Maybe the rat is the new dandelion; he just needs a good PR team.
