Liam Lynch - Life of an Irish Revolutionary

The Cork Historical and Archaeological Society in conjunction with Mitchelstown Heritage Society, has organised a lecture covering the life and career of General Liam Lynch, 18921923, Commander of Cork No. 2 Brigade and Chief of Staff for the Anti Treaty Forces, during the centenary of the week of his death during the Irish Civil War.

Lynch, whose family hails from Anglesboro, has his revolutionary roots firmly set in our area, having served his apprenticeship in O'Neill’s Hardware Shop on Baldwin Street. He joined the Gaelic League, Ancient Order of Hibernians as well as the Mitchelstown branch of the Irish Volunteers in 1914. He rose to Command of the Cork No. 2 Brigade during the War of Independence, he opposed the Anglo Irish Treaty and held the position of Chief of Staff of the Anti Treaty forces at the time of his death on 10th April, 1923 on the slopes of the Knockmealdowns.

This talk takes place in Saint George's Arts and Heritage Centre, Mitchelstown ( P67 XC61) on Wednesday, April 5th at 8pm. The speaker Gerard Shannon, MA is a Dublin historian and author, whose latest publication ‘Liam Lynch - to declare a Republic’, shines a

new light on the life and deeds of Lynch. Gerard will also have copies of his newly published book on Lynch for sale and signing on the night.
