The Playboy in Anglesboro this weekend

All roads lead to Anglesboro over the weekend as the local drama group set the stage alight with their production of the evergreen comedy, ‘The Playboy of the Western World’ by John Millington Synge which got underway on Wednesday night and continues until this Sunday night at 8pm nightly and 8.30pm Saturday.

The play, with a stellar cast under the direction of Jim Keane, is set in a rural headland in County Mayo. A young man, Christy Mahon who claims to no less a feat than having killed his father, comes to this rural community as the locals prepare for the annual sports.

Set in the sheebeen run by Michael James Flaherty with the help of Pegeen Mike who is to be married to the unlikely Seaneen Keogh, Christy, the playboy, is hailed a hero and becomes somewhat of a superstar in their midst.

Three or four locals girls come bearing gifts, hoping to catch a glimpse of their hero as does the Widow Quinn. In search of a man herself, she sets her eyes on the playboy much to the ire of Pegeen Mike who has fallen under his spell.

The sports get under way and the playboy is again the hero of the day. And then, another stranger comes to the sheebeen - none other than Christy’s father - yes, the one he is supposed to have killed. The tabes turn for Christy as does the hero worship he had been enjoying, resulting in bloody mayhem as the play comes to its climax.

This production by Anglesborough drama group is not to be missed. Reserve your tickets by calling 086-8068089. We look forward to seeing you on the following dates, Thursday, March 30, Friday 31, Saturday, April 1 and Sunday, April 2nd.
