MARIAN ROCHE

As people look forward (!) to their next electricity bill, a convincing text scam is doing the rounds inviting people to click

Left: A sample of the scam text doing the rounds, aiming to capitalise on the fact that people will be receiving their energy bills shortly. on a link to apply for their discount. However, this text is a scam, despite the convincing-looking link.

The payment of €200 which will be applied to electricity bills will be applied automatically to all customers, regardless of supplier. There is no requirement to register, or to click any links or to contact one’s supplier.

This €200 credit will be the last one approved by the government currently. Under the Electricity Costs Emergency Benefit Scheme II, a credit of €200 was applied each time for the November/ December 2022 bills, the January/ February 2023 bills, and this current billing cycle.
