Coláiste Fionnchua Mitchelstown TY activities

The TY activities continue as our students continue to experience a wide range of activities as part of the Transition Year programme. They tried out orienteering in Doneraile Park recently with Ted Lucey from Bishopstown Orienteering Club. Students learned the skills of map-reading and navigation, as well as planning for hike, before they were let off around the course in Doneraile Park.

Our TY students also travelled to Neptune Stadium, the home of basketball in Cork. Here, they competed in their first TY Wheelchair Basketball Regional Championship. Students have been raising funds for the past number of weeks. They have organised a soccer tournament, a cake sale, and a raffle and to date, have raised €1000 to go towards the Irish Wheelchair Association.

Past pupil Zoe Hassall also met with our TY students. Zoe, who is the fundraising co-ordinator for Special Olympics Ireland, spoke to the students about the fundraiser they are holding on April 21st. Zoe, along with Jessica who will be competing in the Special Olympics in Berlin in June, spoke about their experiences with the organisation and about the benefits and empowerment of sport.

SEACHTAIN NA GAEILGE

Seachtain na Gaeilge was a great success as students took part in a variety of activities as Gaeilge. As well as ‘ yoga as Gaeilge and daily Irish music sessions, Junior and Senior students took part in a ceilí, celebrating traditional Irish dance. 6th year students got in a little extra practice for their Irish oral exams with ‘Cáca agus Comhrá’ at lunch time, and a giant Tráth na gCeist was held with all students.

‘SCIENCE BUDDIES’

A huge thank you to Ms. Roisin Ormonde of Munster Technological University who presented a brilliant workshop for our 1st year students. Students did acid ad base testing using pH, acid and bases using red cabbage, finger painting, and how to make a lava lamp and a volcano.

From here, our 1st year students turned teacher for the day! Students were paired with 5th class pupils from

Bunscoil na Toirbhirte and they talked them through the various experiments and the uses behind them. Well done to all involved.

SCIENCE CAMP

Well done to our 1st Year students Cara Burke, Alisha Roche, Leon Saich and Sam Delea who recently took part in a Science Camp, which was run by UCC PLUS and MTU.
