HOUSES

Great progress has been made on the seven new homes under construction at Pound Lane. Costing costing close to €2 million, the scheme is now nearing completion. The development, in the capable hands of local builder Michael M Lyons, includes seven dormer housing units, six of which are 2-bed houses and one 3-bedroom house. It is understood that one of these units will be fully accessible to cater for specific needs. Hopefully, the homes will be occupied as summer approaches.

WOODVIEW

Last week, I wrote of my memories of Woodview, the house (at that time only a shell) and the grounds. Built in the early 1830s, the property was part of the estate of the Mountcashells. It is understood that Lieutenant F Prangnall was the first occupier, followed by George Smithwick who lived there until the 1870s. Mr J McLoughlin was noted to have been the occupier in the early 1900s, the landlord at that time being Henry John Lucas of Rathealy House. The house was destroyed by fire in the late 1930s and remained a ruin until it was purchased in 1997 by Patsy and Dora Myers who restored it to its present fine state.

The castellated ruin at the front gate was also a favourite playground of ours. There was a turnstile to the side of the building which was once a school for students of the landed gentry prior to they going on to further education at Eton. The teacher was a Mr Fitzgibbon who lived in a mezzanine in that building. It is understood that a number of students ‘lived in’ in accommodation attached to the main residence totalling 23 rooms (though this figure cannot be confirmed).

The house had a well in the courtyard and the building boasted its own ‘wet’ toilets and sewerage system. John Cotter, the previous owner, informed this writer in th early 1990s that he examined the possibility of restoring the house but was disillusioned that having the building demolished seemed to be the preferred choice of those he dealt with. Thankfully, the present owners didn’t take that route. Some of the fine beech trees facing the road were pruned for safety reasons a few years ago and it was heartening to see them retained rather than being felled, as too often is the case.
