Civic reception for Fermoy Karate Club

Fermoy Karate Club would like to thank Fermoy Municipal District Council for honouring the club with a civic reception. This reception, which was originally scheduled to take place three years ago but was postponed due to Covid-19, was a celebration for the fantastic work that the club has done under the stewardship of Shihan Brian Toomey over the past fifty years, and to acknowledge Sensei Shane Hurley whose dedication has brought him numerous world, European and national titles.

Both Brian and Shane have put Fermoy on the world stage, and our town is recognised as having one of the best karate clubs to be found anywhere. Fermoy Karate Club’s Ken-bu-Kan Dojo, (Fermoy Leisure Centre) is the headquarters for IJKA Ireland, and the Irish Wheelchair Karate Federation. Here’s to the next fifty years.

Competition time has come around again and IJKA Ireland will be competing at the 12th SKDUN European Open Karate Championships and 12th European Cup which will be held in Italy from March 31st to April 2nd. Team Ireland, which is being spearheaded by Shihan Brian Toomey, have a very strong line-up in Shane Hurley, Alison Hennessy, Brian Clohessy and Laureen Richard. Best of look to all.

Well done to last week’s junior students of the week Aaron Duane and Declan Hill. Both boys were presented with their certificates and medals after the junior beginners classes.

Training continues at usual times and once again a reminder that we beginners classes ongoing every week at all our sessions, drop in and have a go, your first lesson is free.

Keep practicing and until next week, Osu.
