ROCKIES STRIKE LATE TO WIN Kilworth 1-17 Blackrock 1-18

A lead point deep into injury time secured victory for Blackrock in this high intensity, highly entertaining Red FM Division 3 Hurling League game played under lights in Kilworth on Tuesday night (March 28th).

Blackrock with an early first half green flag led 0-10 to 1-10 at the short whistle and when Jamie Sheehan tied up the game for the seventh time in the second half, three minutes into added time, a deserved draw appeared likely. However, with play continuing the Church Road based side swung over the decider to deny Kilworth a share of the spoils. While dry overhead, underfoot conditions were testing, no surprise given the recent weather and this encounter was a war of attrition with both free takers kept busy throughout.

Jeremy Saich attacking from half back opened the scoring with Blackrock quickly replying with a goal and a point. Noel McNamara with two points (1 free) made it 0-3 to 1-2 after 8 minutes. Jeremy Saich on anther penetrating foray up field was unlucky not to goal, when his bullet of a shot rebounded off the crossbar to safety.

Both teams continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over Noel McNamara with a free and two from Brian Sheehan for Kilworth, Blackrock with five points (2 frees) as the score read 0-6 to 1-7 at the end of the first quarter. Great pressure from our inside forwards forced a free for overcarrying with Noel McNamara converting the resulting placed ball to make it 0-7 to 1-7. Blackrock and Noel McNamara (2 frees, 1 ‘65’) exchanged three white flags each to leave the score 0-10 to 1-10 on the changeover. The ‘65’ resulted from the Rockies keeper pulling off a good save from a Mike Sheehan goal attempt.

Kilworth were out of the blocks quickly on the resumption scoring 1-1 within 2 minutes to lead for the first time in the game 1-11 to 1-10. Leo Coffey on a menacing run towards goal was brought down for a penalty which the keeper saved well from Noel McNamara, pushing the ball out to his right. Great work and a poachers instinct saw Jamie Sheehan on hand to deliver a sweet ground strike to the back of the net. The outstanding Liam Whelan gained possession from the resulting puck out before dissected the posts. Our advantage was short lived as a point from a free provided a reprieve for our city opponents and the sides were all square for the second time inside 4 minutes 1-11 each. A super free from Noel McNamara close to the side line following a foul on Liam Whelan was quickly cancelled out with two Blackrock converted frees as they retook the lead 1-12 to 1-13.

Substitute Pearse O ‘ Riordan was to have an immediate impact on proceedings firstly being upended for a free with Noel converting, followed by a point of his own from play as Kilworth retook the lead 1-14 to 1-13 nearing the end of the third quarter. The advantage was to change hands once more with two Rockies frees making it 1-14 to 1-15 with 50 minutes on the clock. Liam Whelan with two overs from play either side of a Blackrock ‘65’ left it tied 1-16 to 1-16 after 28 second half minutes.

It was end to end stuff at this stage with both team giving it their all, Blackrock from play in the 60th minute went ahead. Jamie Sheehan responded with what looked like the levelling and final score of the game three minutes into added time. However, the man in the charge played on with the break of the ball falling to Blackrock who finished on a high with the games winning score to leave it 1-17 to 1-18 at the final whistle. While disappointing to lose this was an encouraging performance, the work rate and effort of the lads was excellent against a strong and well drilled Blackrock side.

Next up for the lads is an away tie with Castlelyons on Saturday April 8th at 2pm.

Team and scorers: K Heggtveit, S Og Kenneally, K Lane, A O’Hara, N Byrne, L Carey, J Saich (0-1) M Gowen, R Jordan, L Coffey, J Sheehan (1-1), B Sheehan (0-2), M Sheehan, N McNamara (0-9 7fs, 1 ‘65’), L Whelan (0-3). Subs used: S O’Brien, P O ‘Riordan (0-1), C Donnellan, B Dunne, B Casey.
