Kildorrery claim back-toback victories in Division 3

BY PADDY RYAN

Kildorrery 3-8 Grange 0-8 Having beaten Killavullen in their opening game, Kildorrery recorded back-to-back victories in the Cavanagh’s of Fermoy Division 3 FL when they ran out worthy winners over Grange on Saturday evening in Grange.

The winners with a good blend of youth and experience set the early running, scoring two goals inside the opening quarter that set them on their way to victory. In the ninth minute Tom Monaghan set up Eamonn O’Connor who netted, with Monaghan finishing to the net four minutes later after Jack McNamara and David Kelly linked up very well, a score that moved them 2-1 to 0-1 in front.

As the half went on Grange got to grips with Colin Shealy, John Magnier, Darren Roche, Luke Burke and Gavin Dawson doing well. Good work by Dave Keating resulted in Gavin Dawson kicking over. John Magnier followed with a long range effort in the 19th minute that closed the margin to 2-1 to 0-3.

Kildorrery’s response was swift. Tom Monaghan landed a free, before Matthew Fitzgibbon and Tiernan Condon combined well, with Condon’s return pass setting up Fitzgibbon for a point in the 24th minute. In the closing moments Grange finished in a flurry with Darren Roche and Gavin Dawson kicking two late points that closed the gap to 2-3 to 0-5 at the interval.

KILDORRERY TOO STRONG

On the changeover despite Kildorrery getting the scoring underway courtesy of Matthew Fitzgibbon, it was the home side that started in a very determined manner with substitute Jason McCarthy making an immediate impact when scoring two early points, now 2-4 to 0-7.

However, for the rest of the game, Grange found scores hard to come by adding just one more point from Gavin Dawson in the closing stages. In the meantime, Kildorrery upped their efforts once again. In the 39th minute Tom Monaghan was upended in the square with a penalty awarded - the resultant penalty by Timmy O’Sullivan was well saved by the Grange keeper Josh Irwin. Nevertheless two more points by Killian Cronin stretched the winners’ lead to five points, before Timmy O’Sullivan was again denied by a great save on the line by the Grange ‘keeper Josh Irwin, but the rebound fell kindly into the path of the inrushing Tom Monaghan who finished to the net to make it 3-6 to 0-7.

In the last quarter the winners added two more points by Padraig Flynn and Killian Cronin, to run out clear winners.
