We take on Cork City AC!

On Sunday last the Mardyke was the location for a new type of event for our club. Always willing to try something new to develop athletics participation we jumped at the chance when newly formed Cork City AC challenged us to a club vs club match. Having decided the format of the event it quickly grew legs and started to develop into what was a wonderful day out for all involved.

Medals and a trophy were acquired to add a little spice to the otherwise extremely friendly atmosphere. The concept behind the day was to offer young athletes the opportunity to compete in a friendly, relaxed, and inclusive environment. This was definitely achieved and more.

The overall destination of the Noreen Murphy Trophy was decided by all athletes’ performances over all events meaning everyone counted for the team score. Sprints, long jump, turbo javelin, shot put for all ages, shuttle relays for our younger kids and a 4 x 200 for those a little older closed the competitions with the final relays completed with all supporters encouraged onto the infield to create a tunnel of excitement on the finishing straight. The weather played its part also with bright sunshine letting everyone comfortable in short sleeves get a healthy dose of vitamin D.

Cork City AC took the trophy and bragging rights on this occasion and everyone was delighted to have Noreen our President to present it to the winners on the day.
