Oskars action!

It’s not that all hurleys and footballs have been put into storage for two months. It’s not that all serious team training has been suspended until June – no, club playing activities on all fronts, juvenile, ladies and men is still underway full swing. With the change in time last weekend it’s truly ‘ all systems go’ from U6 to senior but despite all the on-field activity the midnight oil is being burned.

All over the parish of Bartlemy, Rathcormac and Kildinan groups are meeting almost nightly. From Mullentoura to Ballyogoha and from Ballyready to Knockaunduff - it’s the same everywhere as over one hundred wannabe actors earn lines, grow beards, sew costumes, dye hair and proposition props – everything from wheelbarrows, golf buggies and cross cut saws to swords, skirts and shawls. Yes indeed the covid is gone, thankfully but a new fever grips the parish as the plans for Bride Rovers Night At The Oskars swing into action.

On Monday week last we had the casting night which was really ‘auditions evening’. Close on eighty came forward to take part in this huge fundraising effort. Then on Saturday night last at Barry’s Bar the excitement was ninety when the list of films we are ‘producing’ was announced. The productions which will vie for all the major awards in May are ‘ The Snapper’, ‘ The Field’, ‘Sister Act’, ‘Fr Ted - Speed’, ‘Michael Collins’, ‘ Braveheart’ and ‘Bridesmaids’ - what a super selection for the Silver Screen! Rehearsals started on last Monday night, 27th March and are also scheduled for 3rd April, 10th April and 17th April. Rehearsals will be in 30 minute slots, beginning at 6.30pm.

Each group would be recommended and encouraged to rehearse on their own for an extra 30 minutes either before or after their drama coaching slot. Already we have heard of one group rehearsing at 7am before the cast members go to work.

We will have spaces organised for the groups to rehearse. Rehearsals will take place in the Old School, Rathcormac and in the GAA Clubrooms also. The filming of the movies will take place on two weekend at the end of April and early May, this will take place locally and will take approximately 5 hours per movie. One of our fundraising elements is each movie group collectively raising money, we have set a target of €3,000 on this, but I’m sure all will raise a lot more than this amount! Get thinking about ideas and different little events that you can bring to your group, to help raise your funds! This will also raise the profile of the event and generate a great buzz and community interest in the fundraiser.

U16S OPEN LEAGUE

Bride Rovers U16 boys played their first football league match away to St Michael’s on Sunday morning, 19th March in Mahon. It was a wet and windy morning which made poor playing conditions. They say games win goals and the Blackrock side got two. For most of the contest the two sides traded white flags.

The home side got on top and it ended up with Michaels getting two fortuitous goals in the remaining minutes, winning on a scoreline St Michaels 2-6 to Bride Rovers 0-6. Many thanks to our jersey sponsor Fitzy fast food.

Our first U16 hurling league match is on next Sunday, 2nd April at home to St Catherine’s at 11.00 in Páirc Na Bride.

SENIOR HURLING LEAGUE FIXTURES

Round d 3 Div 2 Hurling League v Newtownshandrum (away) on Sunday, 2nd April at 12noon. Round 4 v Mallow on Sunday, 16th April at 11.30am in Rathcormac.

JUNIORS IN ACTION

On Sunday next, April 2nd we have St Ita’s as visitors to Páirc na Bride for a 6pm game in the East Cork JHL Division 1.

U13S LOSE TO MIDLETON

The U13 boys were at home to Midleton on Friday in Pyne’s Field. The boys came out on the wrong side of the result after a hard fought hour’s football in soft conditions. Our next game is hurling away to Nemo Rangers on Saturday next at 4 in Trabeg.

BRIDE ROVERS U10 BOYS

Our U10 boys travelled the short distance to Glenville for our first match of the year. Played in great conditions our boys did us very proud in a total of 4 competitive and evenly matched football games against our hosts.

Our stars on the day were Killian Donegan, Eoin Burke, Joey Allen, Oisín Barry-Sheehan, Luke Buckley, Niamh Finn, Daniel Fitzgerald, Elliot Fitzgerald, Dara Murphy, John Keating, Tiarnán Lyons, Theo Skillington, Fionn Purcell, Kayden Freeman, Jack Roddis, Harry Fitzpatrick and David Fitzpatrick.

Compliments to the young whistler from Glenville who did a great job refereeing 2 of the matches. It was fantastic to see how much each of our lads have improved and every player made a big contribution on the day.

Fixtures are coming thick and fast now as we are hosting Aghada on Saturday morning on the main pitch at 11am in our first hurling match of the year.

CLUB LOTTO

For a jackpot of €6200 on Tuesday, March 21st the four numbers drawn were 2,7, 16 and 17 and there was no winner. The lucky Dip winners of €30 each were Claire Lynch, (Dungourney), Shane O’Connor (The Rock, Bartlemy), Geraldine Tobin (c/o online lotto), Áine O’Grady (Mondaniel) and Richie O’Regan (Terramount). Tickets for each weekly draw are just €2 each and can be bought from club members, in local business outlets and online. Every €2 helps with the day to day running of the club.

CATS DOWN REBELS

We weren’t ‘batin out the gate’ or anything like that but Cork hurlers were still licking their wounds after the trip to Nowlan Park for last Sunday’s NHL semi-final. After going unbeaten in the ordinary ‘rounds’ of the league it was a very frustrating loss on Sunday. Despite having a man sent off Cork finished well but realistically never looked like catching Kilkenny. Brian Roche played well but unfortunately Eoin was out injured, an injury that’ll keep him on the sideline for a few weeks. For Pat Ryan’s side now it’s back to basics in advance of the Munster championship round-robin series.

HISTORY MADE

Last week saw the commencement of our new pitch development venture at Ballybrowney. The central ditch between the fields was removed in the first major piece of work. Hopefully by April’s end a virtual transformation will be seen here. The plan is that the first new playing pitch will be laid out by then. It’s the beginning of a hugely exciting project for the club.

Truly the wheel has come the full circle as in both the 1950s and the 1960s this ground was the main training and playing area for the club- very much ‘going back home.’ Go n-éiri an t-ádh leis an obair iontach seo.

JOHN O’BRIEN RIP

The death occurred recently of John O’Brien, formerly of Sunnyside, Rathcormac. For generations the O’Brien family have been linked with the Bride Rovers Club. Jackie, Jimmy and Michael O’Brien all played with the club in the early years. Jackie was married to Sheila Hoskins - another great GAA family and their sons John, Tony, Jimmy and Eddie (Georgie) were all involved with the club.

John O’Brien was a superb hurler at a time when the fortunes of the team were low. He went to live in Cork City where he reared his family, his wife Joyce predeceased him. John got to be a fine indoor bowls player over the years. We extend our deepest sympathy to all of John’s relatives. May he rest in peace.

STAR PERFORMANCE FROM SARAH

Well done to Sarah Murphy who gave a ‘Player of The Match’ performance in goal with the Cork Ladies Football team v Meath last weekend.

BILLY GOING STRONG

I met Billy (Bob) O’Regan from Ballyglissane last weekend. He was in Fermoy for the obsequies of his brother-in-law Sonny Murphy – we extend our sympathy to all the relations of Sonny. Billy is 94 years of age and going strong, with a memory as sharp as a button. He was a superb hurler in the 1940s and 1950s. After many years in Australia he lives in Monasterevin nowadays with his wife.

REBELS’ BOUNTY

Rebels’ Bounty is the monthly draw for Cork GAA Members run by the Cork Bounty Board, and is an important fundraising initiative within the Bride Rovers Club, as much of the ticket sale revenue is returned to our club to support activities and developments. Across the 12 monthly draws, there are €500,000 in prizes and 360 chances to win.

The cost to join the draw for 12 months is €100 with a closing date for this year coming up soon so remember ‘if you’re not in you can’t win’.
