The Avondhu

A hive of spring activity

The last couple of weeks have been a hive of activity in athletics. On March 19th, Kotryna Pacerinskaite, Eadhaoin Towey and Diarmuid Towey travelled to Tullamore for the AAI National Spring Throwing Championship. It was a successful day out with a 100% medal haul for Fanahan McSweeney AC. All competed in the hammer throw, and all came home with bronze medals in their categories, Kotryna with a throw of 45.25m, Eadaoin with 37.76m and Diarmuid with 38.74m.

Of course, we are more used to Kotryna’s success in the shot put competitions, and there is fantastic news there too. Kotryna is the 2023 National U19 shot put gold medal winner with a pb throw of 12.04m, a huge 0.94m ahead of her nearest rival. This competition was held in TUS International Indoor Arena in

Athlone on Saturday last. We are immensely proud of Kotryna. Talent gets you so far, and her constant dedication to training and winning attitude make her an amazing role model for aspiring champions.

Also competing in Athlone were the U14 boys relay team of David Towey Jr, Eoin Toland, Oran Hegarty, Sean Riordan and Micheal Quirke. The lads won silver in Munster behind a strong Midleton team. They ran a great heat to come third behind Tuam and Newbridge with a time of 1.49.66. This was the final podium trio also with our lads winning bronze with a time of 1.49.26, a National Championship medal and the fastest in Munster on the day. A great team of lads who are great friends also and have been running together for many seasons.

THE AVONDHU CHAMPIONSHIPS

Closer to home, the Avondhu Championships were held in Castleisland last Sunday. A group of 51 athletes, with parents and coaches travelled to An Riocht AC track in Castleisland. There were running, throwing and jumping events for U8 - U16 boys and girls.

A mind blowing 58 medals were won by FMS athletes, and the bus home was weighed down with the metal. This is a very special competition, compromising of clubs in the North Cork Avondhu region, with representatives of all clubs playing their part in the pre event decision making and on the day organisation. Huge credit to the committee on a fantastically positive day.
