Intermediate league

Glenville 2-09 Glanmire 3-15

This was a perfect example of a game of two halves with Glenville dominating the first and Glanmire the second.

Glenville raced into a four point lead after only seven minutes with points from Sean Desmond, Seamus Curtin and a brace of frees from Josh Cooke. After 16 minutes Sean Desmond finished off a brilliant team goal to give Glenville a deserved 1-04 to 0-02 lead. Things got even better for Glenville when Sean Desmond scored his second goal in the 27th minute. Glanmire got a lifeline with a disputed penalty on the stroke of half-time to leave the score 2-07, 1-04.

Playing against a strong wind proved difficult for Glenville and Glanmire ran out winners. There are a lot of positives to take from this performance, with some quality football on display from Glenville. Next fixture is at home to Kinsale on 9th April at 11.30. All support is greatly appreciated.

U18

Our U18s continued their league campaign on Saturday morning, playing away to St Colmcilles in Carrignavar. It turned out to be a tough assignment against a strong home team.

Playing with the wind in the first half we never really got a grip on the game and although we had plenty of possession we weren’t able to convert it into scores and were down by 6 points at half-time on a scoreline of 1-06 to 0-03. The second half played out in a similar manner, with lots of possession that we ultimately didn’t do a good job of converting, and we were caught with two sucker punches of goals as St Colmcilles took advantage of us pressing hard on their end. A bad day at the office was compounded when Ciaran O’Leary suffered an ankle injury late in the second half in an innocuous incident.

Notwithstanding the result, there were some good performances, with Cathal in goal dependable as usual, Ben doing very well at both corner back and halfback, and Ciaran O’Riordan getting some nice scores from corner forward. The final result was 3-11 to 0-09 in favour of the home team.

Team: C Sheehan; B O’Sullivan, S O’Leary, C McHugh; D Forde, M O’Driscoll, Co O’Mahony; C Linehan, C O’Leary; L Foley, B Ryan, S Curtin; C O’Riordan, Ca O’Mahony, F Fitzgerald; M O’Riordan, C Buckley.

The next outing for this team is Wednesday, 5th April in Glenville v St Nicks which is now a must win game to keep league hopes alive.

U16

Our U16 C3 team had their first league game away to Erins Own in Caherlag last Sunday on what was a beautiful sunny evening. This team is made up primarily of U15 players with a few of our U16s to bolster the squad. We had an excellent start with David scoring a goal straight from the throw-in and the team had a really excellent first half, scoring 3-06 and hitting the woodwork five times in a half that they dominated from start to finish.

We knew Erin’s Own would come out hard in the second half and so they did, with a goal and a few points to eat into our lead, but the Glenville lads showed great resilience and came back all guns blazing. They worked some tremendous scores in another fantastic thirty minutes of football and ran out winners on a scoreline of 5-11 to 2-09. There were great performances across the field, with Jack and David contributing 5-5 between them, Donnacha scoring three excellent points Eoghan playing a stormer in centre-field, and all of the backs doing very well.

Team: L Gucihard; A Casey, S Callinan, Z Curtin; D O’Connor, D O’Neill, R Kelleher; E Forde (0-01), D Barry (2-02); C Buckley (0-02), J Hennebry, D McCarthy; J Counihan (3-03), D O’Leary (0-03), E Hartnett.

Our next game in this league is a home fixture v St Michaels on April 3rd.

U11

The U11s played against St Michaels. Twenty players played 2 matches each. Some great score-taking and determination on display. A successful start to our footballing campaign.

Glenville welcomed Youghal to Fouhy Park in round 2 of the league on Monday evening last. A great game between two willing sides. Glenville had the better of the 1st half and led at half-time. In the second half Youghal made a great game of it and made it for an exciting finish. Glenville finished strongly and saw out the game in tremendous fashion. Next up are Aghada away on April 12th.
