No luck for Liam at Irish championships
Young Fermoy cyclist Liam O’Brien travelled to last weekend’s Irish championships with expectations of doing very well, but things didn’t work as well as hoped. At the time trial championship in Nenagh on Thursday, Liam rode strongly but finished just outside the medals in fourth place.
Then on Saturday it was off to Kanturk for the junior road race championship. Liam rode strongly in the early stages, but as the race went on he was unable to respond to the attacks at the front and finished well out of the medals. No doubt his dip in the form he has shown all this season was largely due to a fall while training a few weeks ago and the subsequent recovery time from his injuries paired with the later pressures of the Leaving Cert restricting his preparation.
However there was other good news for Liam this week as he has been selected to ride with the Ireland junior team in Portugal next weekend. No doubt he’ll be back to his best form by then.
